Position Summary

Are you interested in an opportunity to grow professionally within a positive and progressive culture? Northern Health is seeking a Health Information Management (HIM) Advisor to join our Health Information Management department.

Reporting to the HIM Coordinator – Professional Practice, the HIM Advisor is an integral member of both the regional Health Information Management team and the local health service delivery team.

The HIM Advisor provides leadership to their community(ies) on the appropriate collection, access, and use of health information through the development and application of health information standards in records management, release of information, and registration. The advisor utilizes technology available for distance communications as well as face‑to‑face visits when appropriate.

They support and participate in the evaluation of adherence to HIM standards, assist in the development, testing, implementation, maintenance and enhancement of relevant health information systems/applications, and provide support and training services for a variety of internal and external users.

The HIM Advisor facilitates the consequential organizational changes created by the implementation and ongoing use of health information systems, policies, and procedures, traveling to other sites throughout the NH care provider sites as required.

No remote work; flexible hospital location depending on site space. Focus will be on recruiting to Terrace.

Shift Rotation / Hours of Work

Monday to Friday, Days – 08:00 to 16:00.

Qualifications
  • Graduation from a recognized Health Information Management program.
  • Certified by the Canadian College of Health Information Management and eligible for active membership with the Canadian Health Information Management Association.
  • One year of recent related experience in an HIMS department of an acute‑care healthcare facility or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Current valid BC Driver's License.
Skills and Abilities
  • Teaching: Ability to teach clients and others both one‑on‑one and in groups.
  • Knowledge Integration: Knowledge of privacy and freedom of information legislation, patient confidentiality rights and legal requirements to produce records; knowledge of health information systems and database management, statistical calculations and interpretation of reports from administrative and clinical databases.
  • Communication: Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients, families, the public, medical staff and members of the interdisciplinary team using oral, written and computer communication means; demonstrates effective conflict resolution.
  • Critical Thinking: Demonstrated ability to integrate and evaluate pertinent data from multiple sources to problem‑solve and make decisions effectively; applies the problem‑solving process demonstrating critical thinking and decision‑making skills using a systems approach.
  • Management: Demonstrated ability to organize work, set objectives and establish priorities; manage time and resources, implement activities to promote cooperation among the interdisciplinary team, supervise responsibilities of others, and collaborate across disciplines.
  • Leadership: Promotes staff morale, engagement and risk‑taking; demonstrates creative planning for change and innovations; implements NH policies or other protocols and promotes ongoing professional development.
  • Teamwork: Demonstrated ability to foster teamwork and a commitment to excellence in the provision of client care.
  • Equipment: Demonstrated computer skills including the use of Cerner, Med2020 and Windows‑based programs; data analysis and reporting tools; e‑mail and word processing; operates related equipment as required in the specific practice area.
  • Physical Ability: Demonstrated physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
