Job Description
Position Purpose Summary
The Health Care Aide (HCA) performs care tasks under the direction of the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and supervision of the Unit Manager. The HCA works as a member of the Interdisciplinary Team to assist residents with personal care needs as outlined in resident Care Plans. The HCA provides safe and competent care within scope of practice by following policies, procedures and standards of care for the nursing department. This includes medical assistance, appropriate body mechanics, lifts and transfers as indicated by the care plan, and infection prevention and control strategies. All activities are consistent with The Salvation Army mission, values, policies and procedures.
Accountabilities
- Monitoring and Assessment – Contribute to the initial and ongoing development of Resident Care Plans and ensure care is carried out per assignment.
- Report to the LPN health information from objective/subjective sources to identify resident health needs and monitor changes in health status.
- Monitor and document vital signs, measurements and weights for assigned residents and document results; advise the LPN of significant changes.
Care Plan Implementation
- Assist residents with activities of daily living, including personal care (dressing, toileting, transferring, bathing, meal service, feeding, laundry, room organization, linen changes).
- Meal/snack preparation and serving, including picking up and serving meals.
- Maintain cleanliness of the kitchen and dining areas (sweeping/vacuuming/mopping, cleaning appliances, dishes, surfaces, waste removal, meal service environment).
- Assist with managing resident rooms and personal belongings; change bed linens weekly and tidy rooms; launder personal clothing and belongings as needed.
- Provide social engagement and interaction; monitor oxygen therapy and ostomy care; administer prophylactic measures to maintain health as directed.
- Use appropriate supplies for bathing activities and cleaning supplies for commodes, urinals, etc.; use mechanical lifts as instructed by OT/PT and apply transfers belts for one-person transfers as required.
- Deliver prepackaged medications to residents as outlined in policy and procedure manuals.
- Report significant physiological and psychological changes in resident condition to the LPN.
- Maintain current knowledge of the status of all residents in the assigned area.
- Assist in transporting residents to and from appointments as assigned.
- Maintain a clean, comfortable, home-like environment for residents.
Documentation
- Document on Resident Health Records and complete charting as required by standards and policies.
- Facilitate reports of unusual incidents per policies; include medication errors by completing an incident form.
Professional Responsibilities
- Provide input in evaluating resident care through quality improvement activities and committees.
- Participate in Resident Care Conferences as assigned and contribute to staff orientation.
- Attend shift handover and follow routines with flexibility as required.
- Contact residents and families as directed to respond to questions, provide information and emotional support; advocate for residents; refer concerns to the LPN.
- Coordinate with external service providers under the direction of the LPN.
- Maintain confidentiality in all work-related matters in accordance with FOIP and HIA.
Education
- Participate in staff development, in-service education, and resident care conferences; maintain skills through workshops, conferences and seminars.
Occupational Health and Safety
- Participate in The Salvation Army’s Occupational Health and Safety Program; identify and report hazards and incidents; work safely per policy and OH&S standards.
- Engage in recommended training and comply with safety requirements.
Critical Relationship Management
- Internal: participate in ad hoc committees as assigned.
Managerial and Financial Responsibilities
- This position reports directly to the Unit Manager and has no direct reports.
- Maintain confidential client files and coordinate resources with other community services for residents.
Working Conditions
- Walking and standing for prolonged periods; lifting/twisting/bending up to 22 kilograms; occasional full squats and repetitive reaching.
- Shift work, weekends, statutory holidays and extended hours; transporting residents and equipment.
- Work environment includes office or residential rooms, residential areas and medication areas.

Education and Experience Qualifications
- Education, Qualifications and Certifications: Grade 12 or equivalent; graduate of a Certified Health Care/Personal Care/Nursing Care Aide program (including Medication Administration Certification) approved by Alberta Health Services; must be registered with the Alberta HCA Registry; current Standard First Aid with Level C CPR & AED; current Medication Administration Certification; current SafeCheck Food Safe Certification; Criminal Police Check with Vulnerable Sector Check; Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certification; Class 5 driver’s license with clean abstract.
- Experience and Skills: One year experience in a supportive living setting preferred; recent experience with mental health clients.
- Skills: Ability to balance multiple demands; teamwork; excellent communication; compassion and attention to detail; observation skills; knowledge of Protection for Persons in Care Act; professional image; basic computer skills; compliance with Healthcare Aide Competency Profile.
The incumbent’s work environment may involve challenging conditions including dealing with angry or abusive individuals, exposure to bodily fluids, and on-call requirements. Immunization for Hepatitis B and Tuberculosis vaccination may be required.
This is a Part-Time position. Weekly scheduled hours: 23.05. Target hiring range is $22.99 per hour at Step 1 to $28.70 per hour at Step 8; compensation may be adjusted based on market conditions and experience.
