Job summary

Extendicare is seeking a Health Care Aide to provide personal care and support to residents in our Manitoba facilities. Under supervision, you will follow the plan of care, assist with daily living activities, monitor changes in health, and report to your supervisor.

You will contribute to a safe, respectful environment, participate in in-services, and help maintain confidentiality. Long-term care experience with seniors and current First Aid/CPR is preferred; flexible part-time hours are

Qualifications

• Graduate of Health Care Aide program (or provincial equivalent certificate program)
• Experience working with seniors in the community health services setting
• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Demonstrated organizational and time management skills
• Strong interpersonal and customer focus skills
• Ability to perform personal care duties
• Current Basic Cardiac Life Support and First Aid certification recommended
• Ability to lift/transferring clients as required
• Must provide and maintain a Vulnerable Sector Check within six months or obtain one

Responsibilities

• Adhere to the plan of care as determined by the supervisor
• Assist residents with personal care and activities of daily living
• Observe and report changes in residents' condition to supervisor
• Elevate medical emergencies to supervisor or EMS as appropriate
• Plan and prepare nutritious meals as required
• Assist with ambulation, mobilization, transferring and adaptive aids
• Provide cognitive, social, emotional, and psychological support to residents and families
• Maintain resident information confidentiality
• Maintain a safe and clean environment and assist with equipment and belongings
• Engage with other agencies involved in resident care as directed
• Attend in-services to develop knowledge and skills
• Work in a position of trust with vulnerable adults

• Complete other duties as assigned

Mission:

Reporting to the Director of Health & Wellness, the Health Care Aide provides personal care and performs selected tasks, which are within their knowledge and skill, under the direction of their supervisor while adhering to regulatory and Extendicare’s standards, policiesand procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

• To adhere to the plan of care asdeterminedby the supervisor;
• To facilitateresidents’ move in and transfers where applicable;
• Toobserveand report on residents/clientscare/service utilizing appropriate Extendicare forms or tools;
• Toassistthe resident/client with personal care and hygiene and activities of daily living;
• Toobserveand report on changes in residents/clients condition to supervisor;
• To elevate medical emergencies to supervisor or emergency medical services as appropriate;
• To plan and prepare nutritious meals as required;
• Toassistwith ambulation, mobilization, transferring and adaptive aids;
• To demonstrateunderstanding of resident/client needs and maximize abilities;
• To provide cognitive, social, emotional, and psychological support to the resident/client/family;
• To maintain resident/client information confidentiality;
• To respond to resident/client/family concerns and ensure appropriate action taken within decision making authority and or concern communicated to supervisor;
• To assist in maintaining a safe and clean environment, including residents/client equipment , belongings, and nursing equipment;
• To observe & report to the Client Service Supervisor any concerns regarding client’s safety, including physical environment, implement interventions as directed by his/her supervisor & advocate on client’s behalf to ensure client’s safety is maintained;
• To engage with other agencies involved in resident/client care as directed;
• To attend in services to develop knowledge and skills;
• To work in a position of trust with vulnerable adults (residents);
• To uphold and promote the organization’s values and philosophy relating particularly to ethics, morality, and integrity as set out in Extendicare’s Code of Conduct;
• To complete other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Graduate of Health Care Aide program (or provincial equivalent certificate program)
• Experience working with seniors in the community health services setting
• Mustpossessstrong written and oral communication skills
• Demonstrated organizational and time management skills
• Strong interpersonal and customer focus skills
• Must had demonstrated sound skills and knowledge of providing personal care duties
• Current Basic Cardiac Life Support and First Aid certification recommended
• Ability to perform tasks that are necessary for the position,e.g.lifting/transferring clients.
• Must provide a complete and current (within six months) Vulnerable Sector Check (including a Criminal Background Check) or be willing to obtain one.
