Job summary

Alberta Health Services is seeking a Health Care Aide to work in the Neurosciences ICU and Neuro Observation Unit. You will support daily living activities, assist nursing staff, and help maintain a safe, patient-centered environment across units at the U of A Hospital.

The role requires current HCA certification, BCLS-HCP, and ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Casual/relief position with variable shifts.

• Active or eligible for registration with the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA) as a Health Care Aide.
• Proof of Health Care Aide Certificate within 18 months of hire.
• Current Basic Life Support (BCLS-HCP) registration required.
• Connect Care training and experience are required.
• Ability to lift to and including 50 lbs; work in a multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities

• Assist with bathing, feeding, transferring, lifting and portering patients in Neurosciences units.
• Support activities of daily living and deliver care per patient care plans.
• Observe and report on patients' mood, health, and wellbeing to health care professionals.
• Assist with orderly unit maintenance and transport of specimens or supplies as needed.

Your Opportunity

The Health Care Aide in Neurosciences program participates in the delivery of quality patient care by performing services necessary for the physical and emotional wellbeing and comfort of the patient. Nursing Attendant duties include assisting with bathing, feeding, transferring, lifting and portering patients. Nursing Attendants may be asked to deliver specimens to labs, order supplies, clean and maintain unit equipment, monitor unit tidiness including equipment and storage rooms. Physical requirements include long periods of standing, walking and lifting. The Unit Manager supervises the position and the Charge Nurse and other team members provide general direction for specified duties.

Description

As a Health Care Aide (HCA), you will work as a collaborative member of the multidisciplinary team, providing personal assistance by supporting activities of daily living and delivering support services to patients (clients, residents) who require short term assistance or ongoing support, in accordance with the patient care plan and facility policies and procedures. In this role, you will work closely with patients, families, and caregivers across the continuum of care in home, community, and health care facilities. You will assist nurses with the provision of routine care to meet patients' hygiene, nutrition, mobility, recreation, and safety needs; assist with organized activities or programs; and observe and report on patients' mood, health, and wellbeing. Working under the supervision of a regulated health professional, you will assist in maintaining a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors, while supporting effective communication with patients and health care professionals. PLEASE NOTE: Until a new hire provides proof of HCA certification, they will be paid at the uncertified pay grade in accordance with the AUPE AUX Collective Agreement.

Required Qualifications

• Active or eligible for registration or practice permit with the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA) as a Health Care Aide, along with proof of education or completion of Health Care Aide Certificate within 18 months of hire.

Additional Required Qualifications

• Current Basic Life Support (BCLS-HCP) – Healthcare Provider registration is required. The candidate must have the physical capability to perform all aspects of the role, including the ability to lift to and including 50 lbs. The successful candidate must be able to function effective as a member of a multidisciplinary team, demonstrate strong communication and organizational skills, and be committed to providing patient- and family-centered care. Connect Care training and experience are required. This position services the units within the Neurosciences Program.

Preferred Qualifications

• Basic computer skills and familiarity with medical terminology are preferred.
• Previous experience in Neurosciences is also preferred.
