The Kimel Family Centre for Brain Health and Wellness Centre is the world’s first research study examining the benefits of personalized brain health community centre programming for people aged 50+, where members will receive an in-depth assessment of their dementia risk, and then will be prescribed programming to reduce that risk.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the Manager, Programs & Operations, the Health and Wellness Coordinator is responsible for assisting the Manager with Centre research and programming. This role supports the research function of the Centre by conducting testing and assessments of clients as per study protocol and contributes to data entry, cleaning, and analysis. Additionally, this role also supports external research studies which involve Kimel members. The Health and Wellness Coordinator assists with and leads Health and Wellness/aquatic, as well as mind/body/soul education and programming.
Key Responsibilities
As part of the research study:
- Performs and supervises VO 2 max testing, lactate threshold assessment, and submaximal exercise evaluations.
- Assists in DEXA testing.
- Assists with muscle ultrasound imaging to assess muscle architecture and composition.
- Conducts gait analysis and movement pattern assessments.
- Collects, records, and manages psychological biomechanical and psychological data.
- Provides individual consultations to assess participant’s readiness and suitability for testing.
- Collaborates with internal and external research teams to coordinate study logistics.
- Contributes to ongoing discussions regarding study design, methodology, and ethical compliance.
- Assists in preparing and submitting ethics approval applications and amendments.
- Contributes to the preparation and writing of research grant proposals.
- Analyzes study findings and assists in writing research papers, abstracts, and conference presentations.
- Maintains and calibrates all study equipment including metabolic carts, treadmills, ultrasound systems, and gait analysis tools.
- Ensures all testing procedures meet quality assurance and safety standards.
- Provides expertise and input on exercise physiology principles relevant to study design.
- Advies on exercise prescription, motivation, and adherence strategies as part of the research interventions.
- Oversees placement students assisting with the research project.
As part of programming:
- Responsible for the development of fitness, health, and wellness programming in the fitness and aquatics, and mind, body, and soul wellness domains, as well as fitness education in the lectures and continuing education domain in collaboration with the Program Manager including constant program assessment and implementation of changes as necessary.
- Interviews, hires, trains, oversees, and evaluates instructors/organizations providing programming in the program domains of fitness and aquatics, and mind, body, soul wellness, as well as fitness education in the lectures and continuing education domains.
- Assists with the program evaluation process, which includes cleaning and analyzing data, and communicating results to instructors and stakeholders.
- Assists with other special projects, as assigned.
As part of operations for research and programming:
- Responds to and/or assists with on-site emergencies, incidents and accidents, which may involve the provision of Standard First Aid, CPR, and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and/or the completion of an accident/incident report, when required. Performs administrative tasks necessary to document incident and accident reports.
- Builds and sustains relationships with new and existing clients, staff, students, and volunteers.

Qualifications
- An undergraduate degree or diploma in Exercise Physiology, or cognate expertise in a related discipline, from an accredited program.
- Master’s degree in exercise physiology, health evaluation, health informatics, or cognate expertise in a related discipline, from an accredited program is an asset.
- Minimum one-year previous related experience in research or clinical studies.
- Minimum one to two years previous related experience with older adult physical education using a variety of teaching tools.
- Proficient in V0 2 max and submaximal exercise testing, gait and movement analysis, muscle ultrasound imaging, physiological data collection, and the operation and calibration of laboratory and fitness assessment equipment.
- Strong understanding of exercise physiology, biomechanics, and research methodology; experienced in ethics applications, data analysis, research grant writing, and dissemination of scientific findings.
- Demonstrated ability to perform with minimal supervision; to prioritize duties.
- Competency in metabolic testing systems, cycle ergometers, resistance training equipment, heart rate monitors, muscle ultrasound imaging systems, gait analysis systems, and body composition analyzers.
- Proficiency in survey and physical/psychological assessment tools for fitness, behavior, and motivational measures.
- Excellent computer and keyboarding skills, including a high degree of proficiency in Microsoft and Gmail software suites.
- Competency to use/assist/troubleshoot phone and video conferencing platforms.
- Knowledge of Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act 1990 (FIPPA) requirements.
