Position Scope

Accountable to the Site Manager, the Health and Safety Specialist will be primarily responsible for maintaining the implementation of activities related to the plant's health and safety program.

The Health and Safety Specialist participates as an integral member of the Canada Supply Chain team and performs duties in accordance with the mandate and priorities of Scotts Canada Ltd.

The Health and Safety Specialist may be required to work on holidays and weekends from time to time.

Specific Accountabilities
  • Participate in the development, revision and implementation of programs, work procedures and training relating to health and safety;
  • Support the implementation of the OHS program;
  • Participate in changing occupational health and safety culture and act as an agent of change;
  • Prioritize and coordinate prevention activities;
  • Support the Director, Environmental, Health and Safety in their various projects;
  • Promote the prevention and the adoption of safe behaviours through communications and training or promotional activities;
  • Participate in OHS committees and other safety meetings;
  • Conduct investigations and analysis of incidents and follow-up of corrective actions (incident reports, surveys, etc.);
  • Conduct monthly inspections;
  • Coordinate activities related to the requirements and conformities schedule;
  • Train new employees as part of their integration program and give all other training which may include at a second offsite location;
  • Identify and analyze health and safety risks;
  • Maintain a safe and healthy working environment while respecting the standards, legislation and practices in place;
  • Carry out any additional duties as assigned.
Requisite Qualifications
  • Related post-secondary education or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Must possess an accreditation as a certified OHS professional;
  • EHS experience in an industrial setting, preferable;
  • Excellent computer skills with an advance level in spreadsheet / data base applications;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively on a team and with a wide range of individuals (Diplomacy, tact and decision making ability);
  • Strong planning & organization skills;
  • Strong business acumen to identify operational issues and proactively drive solutions;
  • Loyalty, honesty, humbleness and transparency;
  • Have a strong work ethic, always consider the Company’s best interest before making a decision;
  • Deliver results with the highest quality standards – never accept mediocrity;
  • Possess a valid driver’s license;
