Job summary

Hitachi Rail Canada is seeking a Technical Specialist to produce complex hardware application designs and bookwirings for railway signaling systems. You will lead technical decisions, interpret requirements, and write detailed design specifications while maintaining traceability from high-level customer designs to low-level details.

The role requires strong English communication, extensive CAD experience (MicroStation/AutoCAD), and familiarity with industry standards.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary technologist diploma or electrical/electronics engineering degree.
  • 10–12 years of related work experience.
  • Proficient with CAD tools and BOM management, configuration control and MS Office.

Responsibilities

  • Lead hardware application designs and bookwirings to meet railway requirements.
  • Provide technical leadership and direction across projects.
  • Prepare design specifications, SoWs, and RFQs with traceability.
  • Ensure compliance with SelTrac standards and railway infrastructure knowledge.
  • Mentor team members and assist with project planning and budgeting.

Job Description

To produce complex Hardware Application designs/Bookwirings and equipment designs that meet requirements utilizing processes based on established engineering and railway signalling principles.


Key Accountabilities


  • The Technical Specialist is a subject matter expert within the team and acts as a technical leader internally and with the customer.

  • Leads technical decision making and provides technical direction within their area of expertise and across multiple projects. Works to resolve complex problems, in house or in the field.

  • Demonstrates a high degree of initiative, and resourcefulness in solving problems.

  • Good understanding of SelTrac Signal Plans and SelTrac Radio equipment.

  • Good knowledge of Railway infrastructure and deployment of trackside and equipment room assets within greenfield and brownfield deployments.

  • Demonstrates an advanced level of logical reasoning resulting in effective hardware application designs, products and processes.

  • Interprets and writes Requirements that provide traceability from high level customer designs to low level detailed design elements.

  • Proficient in technical writing of technical design specifications, scope of works (SoWs) and requests for proposals (RFQs).

  • High degree of familiarity with CENELEC and AREMA standards.

  • Prepares specifications for hardware and/or software components.

  • Proficient with the use of development tools, CAD packages (Microstation, AutoCAD).

  • Selects an appropriate design approach.

  • Maximizes the use of existing product designs.

  • Possesses or has the ability to gain the Hitachi Competency Management System (CMS) Designer or Principles license.

  • When required, perform the role of a Work Package Manager on projects, collaborating with a team of 1 to 5 Designers.

  • Assist with project‑related tasks, such as planning timelines and tracking budgets to ensure project goals are met.

  • Keeping track of progress on all tasks assigned to the SID project team.

  • Ensuring that all project tasks proceed according to schedule, within budget, and in accordance with all requirements.

  • Ensure that all project deliverables are completed accurately and on time (as per project schedule).

  • Carry out all assigned work efficiently, with a minimum of supervision.

  • Generating accurate, supportable estimates for current departmental technology and providing estimates for technologies that are new to the department.

  • Intimate understanding of Hitachi Work Instructions and the Chorus process.


Key Requirements


  • Post‑secondary Technologist diploma or Electrical or Electronics Engineering degree.

  • 10 – 12 years of related work experience.

  • Proficient with the use of CAD tools (Microstation, AutoCad), Bills of Materials (SAP), Configuration

  • Management, Hitachi Change Control Process (Clearquest), and Microsoft Office suite.

  • Good interpersonal and diplomatic skills to deal confidently, courteously, and correctly with people at any level within the organization, and the customer.

  • Well‑developed verbal skills in English to interact effectively and professionally in a variety of forums.

  • Well‑developed writing skills in English to prepare clear effective documents.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Ability to work in a team environment.

  • Mentor junior or new members of the department.

  • Maintains a high degree of professionalism in the job and in relations with others.

  • Locates and researches source documentation for design activities.

  • Makes timely decisions, both independently and in concert with others.

  • Identifies problems or inefficiencies in the department’s operation and suggest improvements.


Base Salary: $101,966 – $130,726
