Job summary

Varsity Tutors is seeking a guitar tutor to join our Live Learning Platform. You will conduct 1-on-1 online sessions with students nationwide, set your own schedule, and invoice for sessions. Earn competitive rates, with pay up to $40/hour and up to twice weekly payments.

We look for deep guitar technique knowledge, strong teaching skills, and the ability to adapt to different student needs. Remote tutoring offers flexibility, with no commuting required.

Qualifications

• Deep knowledge of guitar technique across acoustic, electric, classical, and popular styles.

What We Look For In a Guitar Tutor

• Advanced Subject Mastery: Deep knowledge of guitar technique including fretting, strumming, fingerpicking, chord voicings, scales, music theory for guitar, tablature and standard notation reading, and repertoire across acoustic, electric, classical, and popular styles. Ability to explain barre chords, pentatonic and modal scales, and rhythm patterns while preparing students for performance, auditions, and music coursework.
• Conceptual Teaching & Problem-Solving: Skilled at teaching progressive guitar technique, chord transitions, and musical expression. Guides students through proper hand positioning, open and barre chord mastery, scale pattern navigation, fingerpicking technique, and song learning approaches. Emphasizes connecting technique to musical goals and teaches practice strategies, connecting guitar to music theory, songwriting, and ensemble performance.
• Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with guitar pedagogy methods and common challenges such as finger strength development, barre chord difficulty, and reading standard notation versus tablature. Adapts instruction using method books, popular song arrangements, and technique exercises matched to student goals to support learners from absolute beginners through advanced players in acoustic, electric, classical, or popular guitar styles.
• Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
• Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
• Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
