Job summary

The Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company is seeking a Group Underwriting Consultant to own a block of group business. You will apply underwriting expertise and client relationship management to analyze complex, high-premium cases in Canada, working with the Sales team and leadership to drive profitability and retention.

You will support a team of underwriters, coach on renewal strategies, and maintain deep knowledge of group insurance markets, funding options, and product offerings.

Qualifications

  • 5 to 10 years of increasingly responsible work in a related role with a focus on underwriting practices in the group insurance industry.
  • Post-secondary education in Actuarial Sciences, Mathematics, Statistics, Finance, Economics, Business Admin, Data Science, or related fields.
  • Completed Group Benefits Associate (GBA) and actively pursuing Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS) designation.
  • Strong working knowledge of group insurance products and services across industry partners.
  • Solid understanding of various underwriting and funding/pricing methodologies including association business, block pricing and flexible benefit plans.
  • Excellent Excel, PowerPoint and Word skills.

Responsibilities

  • Client relationship management in partnering with clients and sales partners to provide win/win solutions.
  • Develop and deliver pre- and post-renewal strategies with leadership.
  • Perform risk analysis using group underwriting principles and external data sources for quoting and risk acceptance.
  • Review complex group insurance requests to evaluate risk based on history and financial background.
  • Prepare marketing specifications and cost comparisons of carrier proposals.
  • Communicate decisions to clients, brokers, and distributors promptly and professionally.
  • Provide excellent customer service and build strong internal/external relationships.
  • Maintain knowledge of group insurance markets and funding options for long-term planning.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Salary: At Wawanesa, salary is only one component of a holistic, comprehensive and competitive offering that we provide to our employees. The salary offered for this role is determined with consideration to various factors, including but not limited to: your work location, local labour market conditions, external market salary data, internal pay equity and the knowledge, skills, experience and anticipated proficiency in the role. The salary offered is estimated to be within the following range: $90, 000 - $110,000. Candidates with salary expectations outside of the range are still encouraged to apply.

Job Overview

The Group Underwriting Consultant is responsible for owning a block of business. Leveraging their technical expertise in Group Underwriting and experience in Client Relationship Management they will effectively manage the profitability and retention of their block. They partner closely with the Sales team and are responsible for analyzing the and determining the acceptability of complex and high premium business according to company guidelines. They will also support the leadership in coaching and supporting a team of Underwriters focused on growing our block of business.

Job Responsibilities
  • Client Relationship management in partnering and supporting clients and sales partners. Bringing solutions to the table that provide win/win solutions for all parties.
  • Working closely with leadership to develop and deliver on pre- and post-renewal strategies, supporting the financial requirement of all parties.
  • Perform risk analysis using group underwriting principles and tools as well as external data sources for the purposes of quoting, negotiating, and authorizing the acceptance of risk
  • Review complex group insurance requests for quotations and underwriting requirements to evaluate the degree of risk involved through assessment of claim history, occupational hazards, financial background, insurable interest and other information pertinent to the decision, for all Group Insurance lines of business
  • Assist with the preparation of marketing specifications, review and prepare cost comparisons of carrier proposals
  • Communicate decisions and respond to clients, brokers, agents, and third-party distributors requests in a prompt and professional manner
  • Provide excellent customer service and build positive relationships with internal and external clients
  • Maintain a full understanding of the group insurance markets, funding alternatives, networks and benefit plan options. Contribute through knowledge sharing to the long term plans as it relates to all Group Insurance products and services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
