Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Set-up, operation, and troubleshooting of GC-MS/MS or LC-MS/MS systems.
  • Coordinate weekly testing schedules within the team.
  • Review GLP project Study Plans and ensure compliance.
  • Oversee bench-level staff supporting projects and report results to clients.
  • Perform data reduction and validate results.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of laboratory operations.
  • Collaborate with staff on method validation and project priorities.
  • Provide guidance to staff on analytical projects and safety practices.

Working within the Chemistry Unit of the Agriculture & Food Laboratory and adhering to specific work unit protocols and SOP’s, the successful candidate will co-ordinate, lead and perform a wide variety of complex residue and trace contaminant analysis on various matrices and biohazardous materials, including atypical matrices and legal samples. A wide variety of analytical methods will be followed in adherence to ISO 17025, SCC, CALA and OECD GLP standards for quality assurance control and maintaining all related records.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Set-up, operation, and trouble-shooting of laboratory instrumentation and equipment (such as GC-MS/MS or LC-MS/MS systems)
  • Coordinating weekly testing schedules within the team
  • Review and adherence to GLP project Study Plans
  • Overseeing bench-level laboratory assistant activities supporting various projects
  • Performing in-depth data reduction on data received from a variety of instrumentation
  • Reviewing, approving and reporting results to clients
  • Conducting method improvements and validation testing
  • Collaborating with other staff on continuous improvement of laboratory operations
  • Providing functional guidance to other staff on analytical projects
  • Performing general laboratory duties as required
Requirements
  • Two-year Community College diploma (Chemical Technology or Chemistry program)
  • One year of experience in a related field or, an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Thorough knowledge and experience in analytical chemistry and/or biochemistry
  • Proven experience in conducting complex analysis in a client-focused, high-volume lab
  • Demonstrated experience setting up, operating and trouble-shooting advanced chromatographic analytical equipment and performing data-reduction on outputs
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Demonstrated experience troubleshooting analytical methodologies
  • Proven experience directly interfacing with clients and delivering time-sensitive results
  • Working knowledge of method validation techniques within an OECD GLP laboratory environment
  • Experience working in an environment requiring a high level of flexibility and ability to respond quickly to changing project priorities and client requirements
  • Good working knowledge of computers and desktop/instrumentation software (i.e. Excel, Word, ChemStation, MassHunter, Analyst, Multiquant, SCIEX OS)
  • Good understanding of laboratory health & safety practices and related acts
  • Demonstrated self-motivation combined with the proven ability to work both independently and as a team member in a high-throughput analytical laboratory
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Experience working in an OECD GLP laboratory is considered an asset.
