Forestry and Peatlands Branch collects, stores, maintains, updates and analyzes large spatial data sets to help in the effective management of these resources. The GIS Technician supports the GIS and remote sensing work done within the Branch and is a critical component of the high performance GIS team within the Inventory and Analysis section. This entry level position exposes the incumbent to a rich world of spatial data, data editing/analysis and the communication of information using maps, charts, tables and reports.

Conditions of Employment
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must possess and maintain a valid full stage Manitoba Class 5 Driver's Licence
  • Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position which require moderate physical effort
  • Must be willing and able to travel to remote locations throughout the Province of Manitoba via trucks, all-terrain vehicles, boats, and by rotary or fixed wing aircraft
  • Must be willing and able to work overtime
Qualifications

Essential:

  • Completion of post-secondary education in a science-related discipline or geography, along with formal training in Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  • Experience with ArcGIS Pro for creating and editing data, updating and maintaining data within geodatabases, and checking data for accuracy.
  • Experience using ArcGIS Pro for creating digital map products.
  • Experience using ArcGIS Online to edit data and create web maps and apps.
  • Experience working with raster data and processing UAV data using specialized software such as Pix4D or Drone2Map.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage several projects simultaneously.

Desired:

  • Completion of GIS Professional (GISP) certification.
  • Experience working with Python, Arcade, or other scripting languages.
Duties

This position supports Branch Geographic Information Systems (GIS) requirements by operating specialized computer software (e.g. ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online) to edit and display geospatial data. This position also uses specialty software to processes raw UAV (drone) imagery data into information products. This position will support other GIS staff and compliment them in the work that supports the section and the Branch, allowing the senior staff to take on more complex work.
