Primary Duties

The GIS Technician is responsible for collecting, updating and maintaining the geographic datasets for fibre, water, wastewater, electric and gas networks. The individual will support various stakeholders by fulfilling requests for GIS data, maps, applications and analysis.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Accurately maintain the current status of utility assets within the GIS.
  2. Create and maintain online applications for operational data collection.
  3. Conduct field verification to substantiate location and condition of existing assets and update the system as required.
  4. Perform quality assurance and quality control on the GIS database.
  5. Conduct data analysis for asset management.
  6. Integrate GIS capabilities with other departmental applications to provide ready to use solutions to enhance the functionality of applications.
  7. Create cartographic mapping products for clients as requested.
  8. Communicate important notices to relevant stakeholders.
  9. Comply with all health and safety requirements, maintain a safe work environment, report hazards and promote a culture of safety in the workplace.
Education, Certification and Other Qualifications Required
  1. Advanced knowledge of GIS systems including ESRI ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS online and related software
  2. Advanced understanding of remote sensing, cartographic standards principles and techniques
  3. Advanced written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present data and insights using various formats
  4. Advanced knowledge of spatial data management and relational databases (Oracle, MS-SQL)
  5. Intermediate experience operating GPS Receivers, Robotic Total Station or other survey grade data collection equipment
  6. Intermediate knowledge of Autodesk systems including AutoCAD Map, AutoCAD Civil 3D
  7. Intermediate organizational, prioritization and multi-tasking skills
  8. Intermediate knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety requirements as it relates to individual, organizational and operational requirements
  9. Basic knowledge of programming languages/tools including Python, VB and Arcade
Qualifications
  1. Post‑secondary diploma in Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Civil Engineering or related field
  2. 3+ years’ related experience working with ESRI software
  3. Class G drivers’ licence
