The Role
This position is responsible for directing, leading and motivating the Underwriting Team and setting the operational business plan / direction to establish and enforce policies and procedures. This role leads a team to ensure timely, accurate and efficient processing of the new and existing generated broker originated business. Responsible for ensuring the processes effectively comply with RMUP policies; mitigate operational risks while minimizing costs while delivering a best in class customer experience. Responsible for contributing, implementing and monitoring the yearly Business Plan and ensuring that it is in alignment with the strategic plan in order to support the achievement of MCAP’s Vision, Mission, Objectives and Values.
The role is also responsible for ensuring the business unit is sufficiently resourced to meet the needs of our Brokers, and to ensure employees are adequately trained and have the management tools required to perform the job. Accountable and responsible for the day-to-day activities related to customer experience of turnaround time of deal decision and documentation by interfacing with the relevant stakeholders, third party suppliers and other MCAP operational units.
As a senior member of the business unit, the Sr. Manager, Underwriting, reports key metrics to the senior management team on a regular basis.
Planning and Performance
- Drive and execution of the yearly Business Plan
- Develop / implement / monitor specific business unit objectives on an annual basis
- Work closely and recommend to Sr. Director / VP Operations to improve operational enhancements to improve customer experience
- Manage escalated and complex loan issues
- Synthesize all documentation on the file and make a decision that will ensure compliance to RMUP and procedures of both external and internal bodies to ensure risk levels are within tolerance
- Able to respond to issues affecting MCAP’s reputation or public image in a diplomatic manner with brokers, insurers and competitors
- Managing resources to efficiently distribute mortgage applications, documentation verification between team members to meet or exceed service standards
- Ensure all staff understand RMUP Policy and Risk Objectives in order to ensure high asset quality
- Monitor all activities to ensure they are performed within MCAP’s documented process
- Communicate with staff to resolve any escalated issues around documentation or closings
- Review and decision mortgages according to Loan Authority Approval and MCAP policies / guidelines
- Maintain up to date knowledge of MCAP and market condition in order to transfer knowledge to team
- Develop and maintain strong working knowledge of Underwriting systems and processes and credit / UW guidelines to facilitate investigation of escalated issues and provide context for answers to the Sales team and brokers.
- Oversee the implementation of Mortgage Insurer and Lender / Investor policy guidelines on the defaulted loans workout solutions
- Stay current with industry trends and recommend changes to policy / procedures as required
- Ability to make decisions based on results in keeping with strategic priorities
Relationship Management
- Acts as Ambassador of MCAP SFO Underwriting to ensure implementation and execution of Lender / Investor / Insurer initiatives in order to maintain a strong reputation
- Responds to the needs of Lender / Investor / Insurer and provide proactive recommendations for improvements / opportunities
- Work with MCAP Lender / Investor / Insurer to resolve any escalated issues and facilitate audit requests as they relate to funding issues
- Able to Lead / manage projects
- Within region, promote the growth of profitable residential mortgages by : Fostering broker relationshipsResponding to broker questions or concerns from all stakeholders with the intent to build / maintain relationships in a timely mannerMaintain good working relationship with insurer and BDM’sCreating awareness of opportunities and gaps with MCAP Credit / Risk on products and programs Develop and maintain a thorough knowledge of mortgage products, policies and procedures, to facilitate promotion of our offerings with mortgage brokers and their customersRepresent MCAP at identified industry related meetings and events
Lead and Manage Staff
- Champion the company’s Vision, Mission and Values as set out in the Strategic Plan both internally and externally within the industry
- Recruit and develop the right people that believe in and reflect in their behavior, MCAP’s Values and culture
- Provide leadership, direction and coaching to direct reports in order to facilitate the achievement of goals and objectives
- Establish, monitor and communicate performance standards to direct reports reinforcing individual results, work quality, continuous improvement, teamwork and achievement of MCAP’s objectives
- Educate, coach and counsel staff to ensure they are empowered to effectively handle their roles in a confident and professional manner
- Identify staff’s strengths to provide suitable career path
- Establish goals and provide guidance to encourage development of employees
- Identify gaps in performance and develop a plan for improvement
- Develop staff in keeping with succession planning and ongoing business requirements
- Establish and maintain an effective system of communication throughout the business unit

- Deal rapidly with serious disciplinary problems, such as absenteeism and performance issues and participate and recommend hiring of new employees.
What You Bring To The Team
- 5 years’ business experience in Residential Mortgage Industry
- 5 years’ experience in a leadership role

- Must be familiar with Real Estate law and its application in all provinces
