Job summary

SE Design and Consulting Inc., in collaboration with ENC Testing, invites applications for a Geotechnical Materials Technician in Sherwood Park, Alberta. You will perform field inspections and lab testing of soils, aggregates, and concrete to support subdivision and municipal projects.

The role requires a minimum of 3 years’ geotechnical experience, valid driver’s license, and strong English communication. You’ll work in a team but conduct field work independently, maintaining safety and quality

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary technology program or equivalent (3–5 years).
  • Experience in geotechnical testing for soils, concrete and construction projects.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License and ability to obtain required training.
  • Strong English communication and teamwork skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide field inspection and QC/QA testing for infrastructure projects.
  • Conduct lab tests on soils, aggregate and asphalt per industry standards.
  • Identify soil types and classify samples accurately.
  • Perform field compaction tests and operate a nuclear gauge.
  • Maintain and calibrate testing equipment to CCIL/CSA standards.
  • Coordinate with clients and project teams to ensure quality results.

ENC Testing has a career opportunity for a Geotechnical Materials Technician in our Sherwood Park, Alberta office.

Position Description:

We are seeking a motivated individual who has a minimum of 3 years’ experience providing geotechnical services (soils, concrete, construction, transportation, etc.) for civil engineering works associated with subdivision and municipal projects.

Position Duties:
  • Provide construction inspection and quality control/assurance testing for various infrastructure and transportation projects.
  • Conducting lab testing on soils, aggregate and asphalt to applicable industry standards (ie proctors, sieve analysis, moisture contents, Atterberg limits, Marshall density, gyratory compaction, etc.).
  • Properly identify/classify soil types for all samples.
  • Conduct field compaction testing on soil and granular materials utilizing a portable nuclear gauge.
  • Monitor the placement of soil and granular materials and subsequent nuclear gauge compaction testing as required Safe operation, storage, transportation, and maintenance of nuclear densometer.
  • Understanding of radiation safety and related policies and procedures.
  • Receiving, logging, handling, storage and disposal of material test samples.
  • Conduct field concrete testing to CCIL/CSA standards including slump, air content and casting of test cylinders.
  • Cleaning, maintaining, repair and calibrating of personal test equipment to CCIL/CSA standards.
  • Lab cleaning and maintenance duties as directed.
  • Effectively communicate with clients, colleagues, and management.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues in the field to consistently deliver high quality results.
  • Operate light vehicle (4×4 pickup) to gain access to construction areas.
Qualifications:
  • Post-secondary graduate of an accredited technology program or equivalent three to five years of related experience (soils, concrete, construction inspection, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of geotechnical materials testing and soil sampling.
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers License.
  • Ability to successfully complete Portable Nuclear Gauge & TDG Training, WHMIS and CSTS Training and all other required training designations.
  • Professional designation with ASET is considered an asset.
  • Ability to work extended hours (overtime) during construction season including weekends.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and professional written and verbal English communication skills.
  • Ability to work well in a group environment as well as are highly self‑motivated as most of the field work is independent.
  • Multi-tasker and innovative creative thinker to effectively problem solve.
  • Successful track record of working within a high standard of conduct, balancing quality and quantity in work performance.
  • Results oriented with strong workplace safety practices.
