Stantec has an exciting opportunity for a Geotechnical Engineer-in-Training (EIT) to join our energy & resources team, based in Vancouver, BC or Calgary, AB. You’ll work with Stantec offices across Canada and internationally to support local and global mining projects.

As a Geotechnical EIT, you’ll contribute to investigations, design and analysis of pit walls, tailings facilities and mine infrastructure within a multidisciplinary team. Hybrid work options may be available.

Qualifications

  • Clear and effective written and oral communication.
  • Team-oriented work approach across disciplines.
  • Experience with MS Office, ACAD, ArcGIS and GeoStudio; MinePlan is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and complete geotechnical site investigations (instrumentation, logging, sampling).
  • Install, monitor and interpret data from geotechnical instruments.
  • Design earth structures like pit slopes and tailings facilities.
  • Support mine/ tailings planning on large projects.
  • Prepare technical design documents under supervision.
  • Create/update drawings, figures and models.
  • Prepare project proposals under supervision.

Your Opportunity

Stantec has an exciting opportunity for a Geotechnical Engineer-in-Training (EIT) to join our growing energy & resources business line based in our Vancouver, BC or Calgary, AB office. This position will work collaboratively with other Stantec offices across Canada, the United States, South America and Australia, to support the service needs of our clients on local and international projects.

As a Geotechnical EIT, you will be a member of a multidisciplinary team working in energy and resources, primarily on metal, coal and large oil sands mining projects. Work will include various stages in the project life cycle, from exploration and site investigations, through conceptual design, construction, closure and reclamation. Our geotechnical project work typically involves design and evaluation of pit walls, mine rock and tailings storage facilities, surface water impoundments, and general mine infrastructure.

Your Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities and essential job tasks include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Participate in the planning and completion of geotechnical site investigations. This may include instrumentation, logging, sampling, and field testing.

  • Install, monitor and provide preliminary interpretation of data from geotechnical instrumentation.

  • Participate in the analyses and design of earth structures, including mine pit slopes, waste disposal areas, and tailings dams.

  • Support mine and tailings planning groups in the development and design of large mining and closure projects.

  • Assist in the preparation of technical design documents under direct supervision.

  • Generate and/or update technical drawings, figures and models.

  • Assist in the preparation of project proposals under direct supervision.

  • Comply with and actively participate in Stantec and client safety programs.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively through both written and oral communication.

  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.

  • Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite of programs, ACAD systems, ArcGIS and GeoStudio (or equivalent) suite of programs. Knowledge of MinePlan is an asset.

  • Work experience in mining or resource industries is an asset.

  • Ability to conduct work in a safe manner maintaining a high degree of situational awareness.

  • Applicants may be required to travel for field assignments with rotations of up to 2 to 3 consecutive weeks, with a potential total annual travel of up to 50% of the time (if required). Accommodations can be considered on a case‑by‑case basis.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in geotechnical, geological, civil or mining engineering.

  • Between 0 to 4 years industry or consulting experience. Co-op or Intern experience is applicable.

  • E.I.T. registered or eligible for registration with Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC) or Alberta Professional Engineers Geoscientists Association (APEGA) is an asset.

  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License and satisfactory Driver's Abstract, per Stantec's Safe Driving Policy.

This position may have additional qualification requirements depending on work assignments. Additional qualifications will be defined in Project Specific Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Plans.

Pay Range:

Locations in Lower Mainland - BC, GTA & Ottawa Ontario-$68,500.00 - $95,800.00 Annually

Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
