Job summary

Shared Health in Winnipeg is seeking a qualified Genetic Counsellor to coordinate the Genetics/Metabolic program at Health Sciences Centre Manitoba Clinic. Working under the Program Director, you will provide genetic counselling, screening and follow-up in collaboration with the genetics team.

The position requires a Master’s of Science in Genetics or Genetic Counselling, board eligibility or certification with ABGC or CAGC, and eligibility for CACG/NSGC.

Qualifications

  • Master’s of Science degree in Genetics or Genetic Counselling is required.
  • Board eligible/board certified with ABGC and/or CAGC required.
  • Eligible for CACG and/or NSGC membership.

Responsibilities

Shared Health leads the planning and coordinates the integration of patient-centered clinical and preventive health services across Manitoba. The organization also delivers some province-wide health services and supports centralized administrative and business functions for Manitoba health organizations.

Position Overview

Under the direction of the Program Director - Genetics and Metabolism, the incumbent is responsible for the coordination of the applicable genetics/metabolic program involving:

  • Genetic counselling and provision of comprehensive follow-up of patients in collaboration with the genetics team.
  • Screening and Assessment.
  • Providing genetic counselling.
  • Administrative Duties.
  • Provision of Genetic Education.
  • Research and Professional Development.
Experience
  • Previous related experience in a medical setting including counselling and teaching preferred.
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
  • Master’s of Science degree in Genetics or Genetic Counselling from a recognized training program required.
Certification/Licensure/Registration
  • Board eligible/board certified with the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) and/or the Canadian Association of Genetic Counselling (CAGC) required.
  • Eligible for membership with the Canadian Association of Genetic Counsellors (CACG) and/or The National Society for Genetic Counselors (NSGC).
Qualifications And Skills
  • Preference will be given to those applicants competent in an Indigenous language and/or knowledge in Indigenous customs, traditions and values.
  • Basic knowledge of genetics and counselling skills is required.
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written) and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated expertise and competence in teaching and counselling.
  • Demonstrated organization skills.
  • Commitment to maintaining and evolving current knowledge in area of expertise through reviewing literature and attending continuing education in-services, workshops and conferences, involvement in research projects as well as participating in the training of Medical and Genetic Counselling students.
  • Ability to work independently but collaboratively with patients, families and healthcare team members.
