Job summary

A Federal Government organization is seeking a Grounds & Building Services Technician to maintain Granville Island. This temporary position offers competitive pay with shift premiums and various responsibilities including exterior cleaning, equipment operation, and minor repairs. Qualifications

Salary Range: Our salaries range from $ 48881.94 to $ 51597.6 and are based on qualifications and experience.

About the role

Join CMHC’s Granville Island team, in the Grounds & Building Services Technician position, to keep the island clean, safe, and well‑maintained.

Temporary position of a duration of 18 months.

Work schedule

Shift: Sunday to Thursday, 8:00 am – 4:00 pm.

Shift premiums

As part of our collective agreement, all employees benefit from a standard shift premium of 5.75% — automatically boosting your annual earnings to $26.32/hour.

Additional premium

Evening & Overnight Shifts (4 pm – 8 am): additional $2.50/hour
Weekend Shifts (Sat & Sun): $2.25/hour

What you’ll do
Core responsibilities
  • Perform exterior cleaning: pressure washing sidewalks, plazas, docks, and windows.
  • Seasonal tasks: leaf blowing, vacuuming, snow and ice removal.
  • Maintain Park sites and playground equipment.
  • Use a work order system to prioritize tasks and interact courteously with the public.
  • Operate fleet and utility vehicles: sweepers, scrubbers, scissor lifts, forklifts, boom lifts.
  • Conduct minor repairs: carpentry, asphalt patching, paver installation, plumbing, drywall.
  • Maintain waste compactor sites, remove graffiti.
Specialized responsibilities upon completing internal training
  • Assist senior technicians with HVAC, machinery, and equipment maintenance.
  • Support events: set up and take down tents, stages, and barricades.
What you should have
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in grounds, property, or building maintenance.
  • Familiarity with power and hand tools.
  • Ability to work safely in marine and high‑traffic environments.
  • Experience using grounds maintenance equipment (e.g., power washers, leaf blowers, sweepers).
It would be great if you also had
  • Basic carpentry and paver installation skills.
  • Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, or mechanical trades.
  • Training or coursework in landscaping, grounds care, or building maintenance.
  • WHMIS certification.
