Job description
About Us

Ayrton Energy’s vision is to unlock energy by empowering storage and transportation through hydrogen. We are seeking a highly capable General Accountant to manage our day‑to‑day accounting operations, run month‑end close, and ensure strong financial controls as we scale.

The Opportunity

This is a hands‑on role for an experienced generalist accountant who thrives in operational ownership, managing the month‑end close, processing payroll, filing GST returns, and maintaining a clean general ledger month after month.

You will work closely with the Director of Finance & Corporate Development and partner with our Procurement team, who manage purchase requisitions, POs, and invoice matching. Your role is to oversee this workflow from an accounting and control perspective, ensuring accurate coding, completeness, approvals, and general ledger posting.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own the full month‑end close process (journal entries, accruals, amortization, reconciliations).
  • Maintain the general ledger in QuickBooks Online.
  • Lead grant reporting.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements for internal review.
  • Oversee AP workflows completed by Procurement (review coding, approvals, posting).
  • Run payment batches once approvals are complete.
  • Maintain AR and support collections.
  • Reconcile corporate cards and employee expenses.
  • Process payroll and related remittances.
  • Prepare and file GST/HST returns.
  • Track project and pilot costs.
  • Optimize use of QBO, Dext, ApprovalMax, Plooto, and Visa Spend Clarity.
  • Prepare working papers for year‑end review or audit.
Requirements
  • Minimum 5+ years of full‑cycle accounting experience.
  • Comfortable running an independent month‑end close.
  • Experience with payroll, GST filings, reconciliations, and ASPE.
  • Experience overseeing AP workflows managed by another team member.
  • Strong familiarity with QuickBooks Online.
  • Highly organized, detail‑oriented, and accountable.
  • CPA designation is an asset.
At Ayrton We Value
  • Honesty and Candor – We are solving hard problems and look for diverse thought – challenging leadership is encouraged.
  • Dependability – We value action over words and will empower you to get things done.
  • Be Kind – We are a team. Win together, lose together, learn together.
Benefits
  • Compensation in the form of salary and equity.
  • Generous vacation policy.
  • Health and dental benefits.

We’re looking for a full‑time, long‑term employee and we’ll hire as soon as we meet the right person.

Ayrton is an equal opportunity employer that values equity, diversity and inclusion within our team. As a women‑led venture, our company strives to provide a supportive atmosphere for under‑represented individuals in business and STEM fields, including a focus on work‑life balance and employee mental health.
