Job description
DUTIES

The Supervising Lawyer is responsible for training and supervising student clinicians, providing litigation support to student clinicians and assisting with the day-to-day operations of the TRU Community Legal Clinic (TRU CLC) in conjunction with other Clinic staff.

The Supervising Lawyer works with the Clinic staff, under the direction of the Executive Director, to supervise student clinicians in their provision of legal assistance to clients, which may include :

  • providing summary advice in writing on various legal matters;
  • drafting documents for clients, including pleadings for small claims matters and uncontested desk order divorces, simple wills, powers of attorney, and representation agreements; and
  • representing clients in Provincial Court and before various tribunals (where permitted).

This Supervising Lawyer is responsible for assisting with the day-to-day operations of TRU CLC, including :

  • consulting with students during and after client intake interviews to determine the level of services that TRU CLC may provide to the client;
  • reviewing correspondence and legal documents prepared by student clinicians;
  • supervising student clinicians during tribunal and court hearings and assisting them in preparing for such hearings;
  • attending tribunal and court hearings when student clinicians are not available;
  • developing practical resources for use by TRU CLC’s student clinicians, particularly in the Supervising Lawyer’s substantive areas of expertise; and
  • co-ordinating with the Executive Director and the Part-Time Supervising Lawyer to develop the orientation, training and supervision of TRU CLC student clinicians.
QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires an individual who : (1) has a LLB or a JD from a Canadian law school or from a law school in another common law country; (2) is a current member in good standing of the Law Society of British Columbia or elsewhere in Canada; and (3) who demonstrates the following attributes :

  • a minimum of three years of experience as a lawyer within relevant legal areas, including family law, elder law, residential tenancy, criminal law, or other poverty law issues;
  • the ideal candidate will have experience in family law, residential tenancy, and small claims;
  • experience in civil and, possibly, criminal litigation; and
  • ideally, substantial experience working or volunteering in a poverty law clinic or a similar legal environment.

The listed salary for this role is $91,000.00 per annum, prorated to $83,400.00 for the eleven months of the term.

This position will cover a maternity leave that is expected to run until August 7, 2026.
