Job summary

A municipal service provider in Northwestern Ontario seeks a Food Service Worker to assist with meal preparation and serving in residential and healthcare settings. Responsibilities include ensuring food quality, maintaining sanitary standards, and providing excellent customer service. Ideal candidates have a safe food handling certification, education at least to grade ten, and an appreciation for working with the elderly. Job description

Under the direct supervision of the Manager - Food & Nutrition Services, or designate, the employee is responsible for pre and final preparation of foods, service to residents, staff, patrons (Meals on Wheels, Jasper Place, Grace Remus Daycare, etc.), special functions, and catering, and cleanliness of work areas, according to the shift assigned.

Major Responsibilities
  • Serves meals to residents, staff, and patrons, maintaining quality, portion control and attractive following pleasurable dining best practices, including therapeutic and texture modified diets; observes, records, and reports concerns to Supervisor or designate in accordance with Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care standards.
  • Responsible for sanitary food handling and correct storage of food materials.
  • Operates all food service equipment including the cash register.
  • Maintains cleanliness of the work area and equipment.
  • Responsible for careful operation and use of all equipment, follows recommended utilization of supplies, chemicals and reports hazards and equipment defects.
  • Loads and moves dishes to and from kitchen and dining areas.
  • Washes dishes, utensils, cutlery, pots, pans, steam kettles, etc.
  • Provides courteous and tactful customer service to residents, families, staff, visitors, and other patrons.
  • Participates in unit and section meetings and in-house training and completes education as assigned.
  • Participates in fire drills, evacuations and other safety measures.
  • Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
Education/Experience
  • Grade ten education or equivalent; and
  • Current Safe Food Handling certification approved by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit; and Completion of or enrollment in a food service worker training program approved at a college of applied arts and technology or a Food Service Worker program provided by a private career college or otherwise meets the training and qualifications requirements under Reg. 246/22 of the Fixing Long Term Care Act; or
  • Has appropriate skills, knowledge and experience in the fields of institutional, health care, restaurant or hospitality food service to perform the duties required of the position.
Skills/Abilities
  • Ability to communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Demonstrated ability to practice good lifting and safety and sanitation techniques.
  • A genuine interest and understanding of the needs of the frail and elderly is required.
  • Must be competent within the meaning of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Assets
  • Previous experience in food services in a health care setting (long term care, retirement home, hospital).
Conditions of Employment
  • Must provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination at point of conditional offer.
  • Prior to commencing employment, will be required to review and attest/affirm to all Pioneer Ridge Staff Immunization Policies.
  • Must be willing to work shift work including holidays and weekends.
  • Must have successfully undergone a "two step" tuberculosis skin test within the 12 months prior to employment.
  • Must undergo a successful Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC).
  • Prior to commencing employment, must undergo a successful Offence & Professional Misconduct Declaration Process.
  • Must successfully complete all mandatory training as required by the Corporation on an annual basis.
  • Must maintain current certification in Safe Food Handling approved by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit.
