Job summary

TEEMA is seeking an Intermediate or Senior Fire Protection Design Engineer based in Burnaby, BC, to lead the design and implementation of fire protection systems for hydroelectric generating stations and related infrastructure.

You will act as Professional of Record, collaborate with mechanical, electrical, civil, and project teams, and travel to stations across British Columbia to support design from concept to turnover, while mentoring junior staff and ensuring code compliance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Fire Protection Engineering.
  • Senior candidates: 8+ years of relevant experience.
  • Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a P.Eng. with EGBC.
  • Experience designing fire protection systems in industrial or power generation facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design and development of fire protection systems for hydroelectric stations (sprinklers, detection, alarms, water supply).
  • Act as Professional of Record, preparing and sealing designs, drawings, calculations, and reports.
  • Perform assessments, field investigations, and risk-based evaluations.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across mechanical, electrical, civil, and project management.
  • Develop designs from concept through construction and turnover.

Overview: The Generation Stations Mechanical Engineering Balance of Plant team has an exciting opportunity for an Intermediate or Senior Fire Protection Design Engineer based out of the company’sEdmonds office in Burnaby. The team supports hydroelectric generation facilities through capital projects, condition assessments, asset management initiatives, operational support, and engineering design services. This role will focus on the design, analysis, and implementation of fire protection systems for hydroelectric generating stations and associated infrastructure. Projects range from equipment upgrades and lifecycle replacements to large multidisciplinary capital programs involving generation assets across the province

What you will be doing:
  • Be a safety leader and champion fire and life safety engineering principles.

  • Lead the design and development of fire protection systems for hydroelectric generating stations, including sprinkler systems, fire detection and alarm systems, special hazard protection systems, water supply systems, and associated piping networks.

  • Act as a Professional of Record, preparing and sealing engineering designs, drawings, calculations, and reports.

  • Perform fire protection engineering assessments, field investigations, site assessments, hazard analyses, code compliance reviews, and risk-based evaluations.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including mechanical, electrical, civil, structural, protection and controls, operations, maintenance, construction management, and project management.

  • Develop conceptual, preliminary, and detailed engineering designs from project initiation through construction and commissioning.

  • Prepare design calculations, engineering reports, technical specifications, construction packages, and procurement support documentation.

  • Review and accept the work of external consultants and contractors on behalf of the company.

  • Support project planning, cost estimating, scheduling, construction support, commissioning, and turnover activities.

  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers, technologists, designers, and consultants.

  • Participate in water supply evaluations, hydraulic calculations, fire scenario assessments, and system performance analyses.

  • Develop practical and cost-effective solutions that support operational requirements, safety objectives, and asset management strategies.

  • Continuously seek opportunities to improve engineering practices, standards, design tools, and work processes.

  • Be comfortable travelling to and working at hydroelectric generating stations throughout British Columbia.

What you must have:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.

  • Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC).

  • Senior candidates: minimum 8 years of relevant experience.

  • Demonstrated experience in the design and implementation of fire protection systems in industrial, utility, power generation, mining, oil and gas, heavy industrial, or similar facilities.

  • Strong understanding of fire protection engineering principles, codes, standards, and industry best practices.

  • Experience executing engineering work from conceptual design through construction, commissioning, and turnover

Technical Knowledge

Demonstrated knowledge of and experience applying:

  • NFPA 850 – Recommended Practice for Fire Protection for Electric Generating Plants and High Voltage Direct Current Converter Stations.

  • NFPA 13 – Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems.

  • NFPA 25 – Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems

  • NFPA 15 – Standard for Water Spray Fixed Systems for Fire Protection

  • NFPA 20 – Standard for the Installation of Stationary Pumps for Fire Protection

  • NFPA 22 – Standard for Water Tanks for Private Fire Protection

  • ASME B31.1 – Power Piping

Additional knowledge of the following codes would be considered an asset:
  • NFPA 72 – National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code.

  • CAN/ULC-S524 – Installation of Fire Alarm Systems.

  • CAN/ULC-S1001 – Integrated Systems Testing of Fire Protection and Life Safety Systems.

  • Applicable British Columbia regulatory requirements and building, fire, and electrical codes.

Software Experience

Experience with one or more of the following design and engineering tools:

  • AutoCAD

  • AutoCAD Plant 3D

  • Navisworks

  • Autodesk ReCap

  • AutoSPRINK, HydraCAD, ELITE, HASS or equivalent

Preference may be given to candidates with demonstrated experience in:
  • 3D plant modelling and coordination.

  • Laser scanning and point cloud integration into engineering design workflows.

  • Sprinkler system hydraulic calculations and layout design.

  • Fire alarm and detection system design.

  • Utility or power generation facilities, particularly hydroelectric generating stations.

  • Multidisciplinary project delivery within operating industrial facilities.

Salary/Rate Range: $76.00 -$93.00 per hour
