Job description

As a Shipyard Finish Carpenter, your primary role is to contribute to the interior and exterior finishing of vessels during the construction, renovation, and repair phases within the shipyard. Your expertise in carpentry, attention to detail, and precision in executing finishing touches will enhance the aesthetic appeal, functionality, and overall quality of vessel interiors andteriors.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Prepare wood structures for finishing by shaping and trimming by hand or power tools;
  • Install prefabricated or custom parts such as hatches, marine hardware, metal trim, and seats;
  • Layout, cut and assemble boat parts, such as doors, paneling, boxes, rails, and trim;
  • Design, build, and install cabinetry for new and refurbished spaces;
  • Work in multiple environments from an indoor facility, elevated heights, which may include tasks performed on scaffolding, ladders, or other elevated structures, confined spaces within vessels, outside spaces with exposure to all elements;
  • Keep the shop/work site as a safe and clean environment to work in;
  • Comply with A.F Theriault & Son Ltd. Policies and proceduresand Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Regulations. Follow safety protocols and maintain, use and wear all personal protective equipment (PPE) applicable to the area you will be in or the operation or task you are about to conduct to prevent accidents. Ensure potential health and safety hazards are corrected or brought to the attention of Management and/or Health and Safety Committee in order to prevent accidents in the workplace;
  • Perform other duties as required;
  • Ensure that materials on jobs in hand are being correctly charged to the proper job numbers, activity codes and/or others;
  • Willing to work overtime and weekends as needed to complete project deadlines;
  • Willing to go to apprenticeship training if applicable;
  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts.
Requirements
  • Proven experience as a finished carpenter preferred;
  • Diploma/Certificate from accredited post-secondary institution is considered an asset;
  • Be trustworthy, dependable and confident, have a positive attitude, have good judgement and be a role model for others;
  • Be able to work in a team environment;
  • Be able to read/understand blueprints and/or drawings;
  • Be conscientious in their work (attention to detail);
  • Be able to communicate in either English or French;
  • Be able to effectively manage his/her time and prioritize work as required; and
  • Be able to work overtime hours as required.
