As a Financial Accountant, you will play a key role in maintaining accurate financial records and ensuring compliance with accounting standards. Your key responsibilities will include full cycle accounting,

The ideal candidate excels in financial analysis, is proficient with accounting software, and demonstrates excellent communication skills to collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders. This full-time position reports to a Controller and offers an opportunity to contribute to the financial success of AFL in Canada.

JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Controller, the Financial Accountant will be responsible for performing full cycle accounting of two separate entities.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND RESULTING OUTCOMES

General Ledger Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for full cycle accounting, including reconciliations of all balance sheet accounts, and monthly closing of two entities.
  • Upload and post recurring general accounting entries including wage accruals, commissions, LVP reclasses,
  • medical claims accrual, temporary labor accrual, pension bonus accrual, incentive compensation
  • accrual, T&E accrual, and federal and provincial income taxes
  • Prepare and remit sales tax returns
  • Monitor intra-company accounts and oversee reconciliations and preparation and distribution of intracompany billings
  • Perform month end, quarter and year end close processes including preparation of financial statements
  • and Corporate income tax filings
  • Reconciliation of payroll files and posting all applicable journal entries

PP&E Responsibilities:

  • Maintain continuity schedule of the fixed asset base, both owned and leased including tracking and
  • reconciliation of such assets and recording depreciation per company policy
  • Monitor/report all capital expenditures monthly including processing all capitalization and
  • retirements
  • Maintain both tax and accounting asset records and record all applicable general ledger transactions
  • related to fixed assets

Internal Control

  • Facilitate collection of data requested by internal audit manager for external audit
  • Ensure any applicable key control deficiencies are addressed including actions for remedy
  • Establish and uphold company policies
  • Help build and maintain positive relations within the team
  • Protect organizations’ values by keeping information confidential
  • Enhance organizational reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing requests and exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishment
  • Adhere to and promote the environmental, health & safety policies of AFL
  • Employee may be asked to perform other ancillary or related duties as required, to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting/finance, or enrolled in the CPA program
  • 3-5 years of relevant work experience
  • Proficient in MS Office, specifically Excel, Word, and Access and QuickBooks. Microsoft Dynamics SL and Great Plains is highly desirable
Skills and Abilities
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively with a wide variety of people and functions
  • Ability to multitask and analyze detailed financial information
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written. Position requires communication with various levels within
  • organization
  • In-depth understanding of financial accounting standards
WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical, Sensory and Mental Requirements

  • Hybrid Office Environment - 2 days in office mandatory per week
  • Minimal travel required (up to 10%)
Work Hours
  • 40 hours/week, with general hours of Monday through Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm. Occasional weekend or longer hours during month-end close
