Job Description

The Finance and Commodity Analyst will support building subject matter expertise in commodities, risk management, data analytics, and financial analysis. With access to a Bloomberg terminal and responsibility for operational aspects of the commodity hedging portfolio, the analyst will monitor and report on portfolio PNL and open commodity exposure, and develop strategies to hedge risk. The analyst will also be responsible for commodity-related financial analysis and management of procurement data.

Responsibilities
Procurement Finance

Includes analyzing spend; tracking savings; providing financial analysis in support of key project decisions; coordinating budgets and forecasts; developing performance measures; presenting results; and developing and applying best in class practices:

  • Develop financial models, primarily relating to commodities, for key stakeholders in the business.
  • Construction of models may be highly time-sensitive and require a high degree of accuracy.
  • Occasionally the data to be used in the analysis will be incomplete or imperfect and subjective judgment and ability to independently source data relevant to the query is necessary.
  • Ongoing tracking of key supplier costs for specific commodities will also be required (e.g. Pulp, paper, resins, natural gas etc.).
  • Spend and data analytics and project work (risk management, process automation, budgeting, should-cost, etc.) – largely self-directed with a focus on bigger picture and strategic items that can benefit the business long-term.
  • Maintenance of hedging confirmation process, risk spreadsheets for audit, updating of process documentation and codification, automation and/or elimination of repetitive tasks, maintaining and analyzing data for continuous improvement.
Commodity Management

Including the development of risk management strategies for commodity based raw materials and managing operational aspects of the commodity hedging program.

  • Monitor relevant commodities daily and report on commodity portfolio PNL and exposure to direct manager and the business at large.
  • Develop strategies to limit commodity risk, present these strategies convincingly, and execute trades with the appropriate counter-parties to complete the hedging mandate.
  • Management of physical commodities (especially delivery of natural gas) is also required.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree is required; preferred degree in Finance, Economics or Accounting.
  • 2–3 years’ experience in an accounting or finance role.
  • Familiarity with Bloomberg considered an asset.
  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills and the ability to build relationships and influence people.
  • Ability to handle multiple time-sensitive projects and work towards long-term deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Strong financial modelling skills and a high level of attention to detail.
  • Ability to model complex data accurately and make judgment calls when data availability is limited.
  • Knowledge of commodities, commodity derivatives, and risk management concepts.
