Overview

As a Field Technologist, you will play a crucial role in assessing the condition of transmission line components, ensuring their structural integrity and operational reliability. You will be part of a specialized team conducting routine and advanced tests, troubleshooting equipment, and interacting with clients to deliver high-quality service. This position demands a road warrior mindset, as you will be traveling extensively to various sites.

Responsibilities
  • Perform routine mechanical and electrical tests, investigations, and technical studies according to established procedures.
  • Conduct laboratory testing on aging conductors using standard techniques to ensure quality control.
  • Assist with field acceptance testing and the use of automated inspection devices.
  • Design, fabricate, and maintain complex equipment and develop related test methods.
  • Prepare and execute sample preparations such as fiber splicing, epoxy resins, and conductor sectioning.
  • Analyze test results using standard software packages and prepare technical reports.
  • Respond to customer inquiries, maintain good relations, and ensure customer satisfaction by adhering to quality and safety protocols.
  • Occasionally supervise and coordinate the work of others while ensuring safety standards are met.
  • Travel extensively, including internationally, to perform field assessments and troubleshooting.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Technologist Degree.
  • 5+ years of experience in electrical or mechanical testing.
  • Ability to travel 75% of the time, including internationally.
  • Theoretical knowledge of electrical power systems.
  • Proficiency with power tools and mechanical capabilities.
  • Experience with data acquisition systems such as LabView, MATLAB, or Python.
  • Valid Driver's License and ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work under pressure.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • 2 years of experience with Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods like X-ray, Eddy Current, or Magnetic Flux.
  • Experience in a lab environment is an asset.
  • 3D CADD Design Experience.
  • Ability to read mechanical drawings and perform basic design tasks.
Work Environment

You will be part of a small team of six people spread across Canada, USA, and Europe. The role requires independent work, with 70% of the time working alone, especially during travel, and 30% collaborating with team members. Travel is extensive, with 75% of the time within Canada, 35% in the USA, and 15% internationally. The home base is at the Kipling Lab, which is renowned for its advanced testing facilities. A company credit card is provided to cover travel-related expenses such as transportation, accommodation, and meals.
