Job summary

Shermco Canada is seeking an experienced Field Services Technician IV, Electrical Testing to lead complex testing, troubleshooting, maintenance, and commissioning activities on low-, medium-, and high-voltage electrical systems.

This senior field position is ideal for an independent professional who can guide technical assignments, provide field-level recommendations, and mentor junior and intermediate technicians.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in electrical engineering technology or related technical discipline.
  • At least five years of progressive experience testing, maintaining, commissioning, or troubleshooting electrical power distribution systems.
  • NETA Level III or IV certification or equivalent experience; candidates working toward certification may be considered.
  • Advanced knowledge of electrical testing procedures, equipment, and safety practices.
  • Experience with protective relays, transformers, switchgear, cables, and control systems.
  • Ability to interpret electrical drawings, schematics, and equipment manuals.
  • Experience leading field assignments and mentoring technicians.
  • Strong Excel and test-data management skills.
  • Canadian electrical trade or technology credentials (Red Seal/CET) are assets.

Responsibilities

  • Lead testing, inspection, troubleshooting, maintenance, start-up, and commissioning on low-, medium-, and high-voltage systems.
  • Test transformers using Doble, transformer turns ratio, insulation resistance, power factor, and other methods.
  • Test and calibrate protective relays, including complex protection schemes.
  • Perform testing on instrument transformers, cables, switchgear, circuit breakers, meters.
  • Conduct advanced cable testing (VLF, Tan Delta, power factor, DC hi-pot).
  • Analyze test results, diagnose complex issues, and provide practical recommendations.
  • Review test data, field reports, and commissioning records for accuracy.
  • Support job planning, hazard assessments, and field execution strategies.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior technicians.
  • Collaborate with customers, supervisors, engineers, and project teams; respond to outages as needed.

The Opportunity

Shermco Canada is seeking an experienced Field Services Technician IV, Electrical Testing to lead complex testing, troubleshooting, maintenance, and commissioning activities on low-, medium-, and high-voltage electrical systems.

This senior field position is ideal for an experienced technician who can work independently, lead technical assignments, provide sound field-level recommendations, and mentor junior and intermediate technicians.

Responsibilities
  • Lead electrical testing, inspection, troubleshooting, maintenance, start-up, and commissioning activities on low-, medium-, and high-voltage electrical systems.
  • Test and troubleshoot power transformers using Doble, transformer turns ratio, insulation resistance, power factor, and other diagnostic methods.
  • Test, calibrate, and troubleshoot electromechanical, solid-state, and microprocessor-based protective relays, including complex protection schemes.
  • Perform testing on instrument transformers, cables, switchgear, circuit breakers, automatic transfer switches, and power-metering equipment.
  • Conduct advanced cable testing using methods such as VLF, Tan Delta, power factor, and DC high-potential testing, where applicable.
  • Analyze test results, diagnose complex equipment or system issues, and provide practical technical recommendations.
  • Review test data, field reports, commissioning records, and technical documentation for accuracy and completeness.
  • Support job planning, hazard assessments, work methods, technical procedures, and field execution strategies.
  • Provide technical guidance, hands-on training, and mentorship to junior and intermediate technicians.
  • Collaborate with customers, supervisors, engineers, and project teams to complete assignments safely and successfully.
  • Participate in an emergency on-call rotation and respond to customer outages when required.
  • Promote compliance with Shermco safety policies, customer requirements, applicable electrical codes, and industry standards.
Qualifications
  • Diploma in electrical engineering technology, electrical power and controls, or a related technical discipline. An equivalent combination of education, military training, and relevant industry experience may be considered.
  • At least five years of progressive experience testing, maintaining, commissioning, or troubleshooting electrical power distribution systems.
  • NETA Level III or IV certification, or equivalent recognized electrical-testing experience. Candidates actively working toward certification may also be considered.
  • Advanced knowledge of electrical testing procedures, testing equipment, power-system components, and electrical safety practices.
  • Demonstrated experience with protective relays, power transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, cables, and associated control systems.
  • Ability to interpret electrical drawings, schematics, protection diagrams, equipment specifications, and technical manuals.
  • Experience leading field assignments and coaching or mentoring other technicians.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Excel and electronic test-data management systems.
  • PowerDB or similar test-reporting software experience is considered an asset.
  • Relevant Canadian electrical trade or technology credentials, including Red Seal or Certified Engineering Technologist designations, are considered assets.

Travel and Work Requirements

  • Ability to travel throughout Manitoba, across Canada, and to the United States, including overnight travel, based on project and customer requirements.
  • Must hold or be eligible to obtain the documentation required for business travel to the United States.
  • Ability to work overtime and occasionally work evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, or emergency callouts.
  • Valid driver's licence and ability to meet the requirements of Shermco's vehicle-use program.
  • Ability to perform the essential field duties of the position, including standing, walking, climbing, bending, working in restricted spaces, and lifting or moving up to 23 kg/50 lb, with reasonable accommodation where required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English to understand safety instructions, complete technical documentation, and coordinate field activities.
  • NFPA 70E, CSA Z462, CPR, First Aid, AED, and other relevant safety training are considered assets. Required role-specific training may be provided.
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
