Job Title: Field Service Engineer
Reporting to: PGSV Field Service Manager

Mission
Plan and execute, with minimal professional guidance, complex semi-technical field assignments involving the installation, modification, overhaul, troubleshooting, test, inspection, repair of High Voltage Circuit Breakers and other High Voltage equipment up to 800kV. Coordinate work with other groups to ensure meeting commitments typically on remotely operated maintenance and testing equipment. Recommend measures to improve operations and customer service.
Main Responsibilities
- Perform complex field service operations that typically present unusual problems requiring strong technical skills.
- Deliver outstanding and professional services, remotely or on-site, in key categories, e.g. installation and commissioning, maintenance, repairs, overhauls, engineering and consulting, advanced services, extensions, upgrades and retrofits, end-of-life services and replacements.
- Exceed customer expectations by understanding and anticipating current and potential needs.
- Troubleshoot potential equipment failures and proactively take measures to offset/prevent and inform internal partners.
- Identify electrical or mechanical problems and determine with no or minimal assistance the corrective action.
- Conduct tests requiring selection and adaptation or modification of equipment and procedures. Compile and evaluate data to determine and resolve operating problems or malfunctions.
- Perform and document field tests such as SF6 leak detection, gas analysis, timing, power factor, contact resistance, functional tests and others.
- Identify and develop potential sales and business opportunities based on knowledge of customers and collaboration across HITACHI ENERGY.
- Suggest product and process improvements within the business to enhance operations and customer service.
- Lead the performance of assigned field services projects such as non-destructive examinations and analysis. May be responsible for direction, analysis, and reports involving complex test projects.
- Often work non-standard schedules at field locations with exposure to varying environmental conditions.
- Provide leadership in the assembly and operation of field service test equipment.
Lead and coordinate crew of assigned workers as required
Be the PICW – Person in charge of Work, executing Safety Job Hard Analysis, Activity Based Risk Assessment, leading site safety meetings and issue permits as required.
Knowledge, skills, experience
- Candidates must have STRONG mechanical and electrical abilities.
- A trade education and experience such as Industrial Mechanic and Electrical trade backgrounds with experience would be considered.
- A college or university diploma / degree in a technical field (electrical engineering or technologist, mechanical engineering, or technologist) would be an asset.
- More than 5 years of experience in technical field service work, working as a field service engineer with power / mechanical equipment or construction.
- Sound knowledge of and hands‑on experience in substation construction, servicing, maintaining, commissioning, repairing high voltage equipment up to 800kV, power system equipment, GCB, DTB, LTB, GIS, SF6 gas handling, Other HV substation apparatus, Capacitors and Filters, Synchronized Switching controllers, breaker monitoring system strongly recommended.
- Strong knowledge of electrical testing, circuit breaker timing / velocity, CT and PT testing, PF, static contact resistance, Insulation resistance, dynamic resistance measurement, and Hi-Pot.
- Experience working with Power Utilities.
- Leadership experience coordinating and leading crew on electrical projects.
- Must have good computer skills with MS Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, Test equipment specific software.
- Current driver’s license valid in Canada and ability to work in Canada.
- Ability to travel to other locations in Canada.
- A collaborative, solutions‑oriented approach, and strong communication skills.
- Travel estimated at 80%.
- Fluent in English. For positions in the province of Quebec, Fluent in French.
