Job summary

Matheson Constructors is seeking a Field Engineer Co‑op Student to support the Site Team with daily coordination and execution of construction activities. You will gain hands‑on experience in site operations, building layout, material coordination, and safety under the guidance of the Site Superintendent.

You will develop practical knowledge in surveying, documentation, scheduling, and quality control while contributing to active projects in a fast‑paced environment on Ontario project sites.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a post‑secondary degree or diploma program in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Construction Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or a related discipline.
  • Must be eligible to participate in a co‑op, internship, or work‑integrated learning term through their post‑secondary institution.
  • Previous construction, engineering, surveying, or related field experience is considered an asset but is not required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with site operations, concrete coordination, and coordination with the Site Team.
  • Maintain records related to concrete ordering, placement, and tracking quantities.
  • Support building layout, surveying, and measurement activities under supervision.
  • Document site records, photos, and daily diaries; assist with project documentation.
  • Participate in site and project meetings and help track items and follow-up actions.

As a Field Engineer Co-op Student, you will support the Site Team with the day-to-day coordination and execution of construction activities. Working under the direction of the Site Superintendent and other experienced project team members, you will gain hands‑on experience in site operations, building layout, material coordination, quality control, health and safety, scheduling, and construction documentation.

This position provides an excellent opportunity to develop practical construction knowledge and field experience while contributing to active construction projects in a fast‑paced environment.

Key Responsibilities
Site Operations & Concrete
  • Assist with calculating concrete volumes using drawing take-offs and site measurements and develop an understanding of concrete mixes and their applications.
  • Assist with maintaining records related to concrete ordering and placement, including tracking theoretical versus actual quantities.
  • Support the coordination of concrete inspections and testing with third‑party inspection agencies.
  • Assist with verifying concrete types, reviewing concrete delivery documentation, and monitoring concrete placement under the direction of the Site Team.
  • Gain exposure to the planning and coordination of concrete pours, including specialty and simultaneous pours.
  • Accurately record concrete pour dates, maintain concrete supply tickets, and assist with updating as‑built pour drawing records.
  • Assist with verifying existing grade conditions, elevations, and site measurements against construction drawings and consultant information.
  • Support the Site Superintendent and Site Team with the coordination of engineering and construction details that may affect site activities, quality, or schedule.
Building Layout & Surveying
  • Apply basic surveying principles and gain hands‑on experience using surveying and building layout equipment.
  • Assist with reviewing construction documents to understand project survey and layout requirements.
  • Support building layout activities under the direction of experienced site personnel.
  • Assist with taking and verifying field measurements and identifying potential discrepancies for review by the Superintendent or appropriate Project Team member.
  • Develop an understanding of construction tolerances and contractual layout requirements.
  • Assist with identifying potential conflicts between field conditions and construction drawings and elevate concerns to the appropriate Project Team member.
Drawings, Specifications & Documentation
  • Develop the ability to read and interpret construction drawings, details, sections, floor plans, specifications, and other project documentation.
  • Assist with accurately marking up and maintaining site record drawings, including changes resulting from RFIs, Site Instructions, Contemplated Change Notices, and Change Directives.
  • Assist with maintaining site documentation and logs, including timesheets, packing slips, labour quantities, Purchase Orders, invoices, and daily job diaries.
  • Identify potential discrepancies, conflicts, or missing information within construction documentation and bring them to the attention of the appropriate Project Team member.
  • Assist with maintaining organized and accurate project and site records throughout the construction process.
  • Assist with taking and maintaining daily site photographs to document subcontractor activities and overall project progress.
Scheduling & Site Coordination
  • Develop an understanding of the construction schedule and assist with monitoring site progress against planned activities.
  • Assist the Superintendent with developing and updating short‑term look‑ahead schedules.
  • Support the tracking of upcoming activities, milestones, deliveries, inspections, and subcontractor requirements.
  • Assist with coordinating information between the Site Team, Project Team, subcontractors, consultants, and suppliers.
  • Communicate site observations, potential conflicts, deficiencies, and other concerns to the appropriate Project Team member.
  • Participate in site and project meetings as required and assist with tracking outstanding items and follow‑up activities.
Quality Control
  • Assist the Superintendent with the implementation and documentation of Matheson's Quality Management Program and the site‑specific Project Quality Control Plan.
  • Assist with tracking Consultant and third‑party inspection reports.
  • Follow up on identified deficiencies under the direction of the Site Team.
  • Observe construction activities and develop practical knowledge of construction methods, sequencing, materials, equipment, and trade coordination.
  • Assist with documenting quality‑related observations and ensuring issues are communicated to the appropriate Project Team member.
  • Develop an understanding of project quality requirements, construction tolerances, testing procedures, and inspection processes.
Health & Safety
  • Follow all Matheson Health & Safety policies, procedures, and site‑specific requirements.
  • Develop familiarity with applicable occupational health and safety legislation and requirements.
  • Participate in site safety activities and contribute to maintaining a safe, clean, and organized work environment.
  • Recognize and report potential hazards or unsafe conditions to the Superintendent or appropriate site personnel.
  • Demonstrate a proactive commitment to health and safety while working on active construction sites.
  • Participate in toolbox meetings, site orientations, inspections, and other safety‑related activities as required.
Construction Methods & Practices
  • Develop practical knowledge of construction methods, materials, equipment, sequencing, and trade coordination through hands‑on field experience.
  • Assist the Site Team with coordinating engineering and construction details that impact site operations.
  • Gain exposure to construction activities and understand how drawings, specifications, schedules, and site conditions are applied in the field.
  • Assist with monitoring subcontractor activities and communicating progress or concerns to the appropriate Site Team member.
  • Support the Superintendent and Site Team with various project and field‑related tasks as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support project, business unit, and corporate objectives.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
  • Currently enrolled in a post‑secondary degree or diploma program in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Construction Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or a related discipline.
  • Must be eligible to participate in a co‑op, internship, or work‑integrated learning term through their post‑secondary institution.
  • Previous construction, engineering, surveying, or related field experience is considered an asset but is not required.
  • Strong interest in gaining hands‑on experience in field operations and developing practical knowledge of construction methods and project delivery.
Technical Skills
  • Strong computer skills with an aptitude for learning new software and systems.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Experience with Procore or other construction management software is considered an asset.
  • Experience with MS Project is considered an asset.
  • Basic understanding of construction drawings, specifications, surveying, building layout, construction sequencing, and field operations.
  • Basic understanding of construction methods, materials, equipment, and building processes, or a strong willingness to learn.
  • Ability to take accurate measurements and perform basic mathematical calculations related to construction activities.

Requirements
  • Valid driver's licence and access to a vehicle is considered an asset.
  • Ability to travel to project sites and off‑site locations throughout Ontario as required.
  • Ability and willingness to work on active construction sites in a variety of conditions and environments.
  • CSA‑approved steel‑toe safety boots and appropriate safety equipment are required.
  • Ability to lift or move up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work both indoors and outdoors.
Working Conditions
  • Combination of active construction site and office environments.
  • Travel to various project sites and off‑site locations throughout Ontario as required.
  • Work both indoors and outdoors in all seasons and weather conditions.

  • Overtime may be required based on project needs.
  • Required personal protective equipment (PPE) includes, but is not limited to, CSA‑approved steel‑toe safety boots and appropriate safety glasses/goggles.
