Job summary

City of Markham is seeking a Fencing Program Instructor to plan, teach, and lead fencing activities for children, youth and adults at Angus Glen Community Centre. The role emphasizes safety, inclusivity, and skill development in a dynamic community setting.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma required.
  • Post secondary education preferred with fencing training.
  • Minimum 3 years experience teaching fencing to diverse ages.
  • Current Standard First Aid OR Intermediate First Aid with CPR C and AED.
  • High Five Certification and Healthy Child Development principles. (Children ages 6–12)
  • NCCP Level 2 certified. Fencing active.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate, lead and supervise a fencing program for participants.
  • Write and submit weekly lesson plans and modify for abilities.
  • Manage equipment, inventory and ensure safety at all times.
  • Maintain attendance records and communicate with coordinator.
  • Ensure participant data forms and emergency info are completed.
  • Provide orientation to patrons at program start and enforce rules.

Job Summary

Plans, organizes, instructs, and leads fencing programs for children, youth, and adult participants. Teaches fundamental and advanced fencing techniques, safety procedures, footwork, bladework, and tactical skills in a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment. Ensures a positive and safe environment for participants and peers.

Hours of Work

Evenings & Weekends: Must be available for various evenings and weekends throughout the week and be willing to occasionally cover shifts for staff absences.

Job Duties
  • Facilitates, leads and supervises a Fencing program area for the assigned participants. The purpose of the instruction context is to create an understanding of the basic techniques and skills of Fencing being taught.
  • Organizes and writes lesson plans to be handed in by week two of the program. Develops lesson plans specific to the abilities of Fencing. Reviews lesson plans with the Recreation Supervisor/Program Coordinator prior to class and submits at the end of each session.
  • Prepares and organizes program equipment and supplies, maintaining an inventory of supplies, reporting to the Program Coordinator/Recreation Supervisor any items needing replacement. Ensures the site, equipment and supplies are appropriate to the activity and environment to reduce and minimize risk to other staff and participants.
  • Keeps attendance records and checks with participants who have extended absences. Gives all new participant names that are not on the list to the Program Coordinator/Recreation Supervisor.
  • Checks and ensures all participant emergency and medical information is obtained through the completion of a personal data form on the participants’ first day.
  • Directly guides volunteers and PT Program Assistants as required.
  • Ensures safety at ALL times, enforcing safety regulations as set out by the City of Markham sports, fitness, arts and leisure programs policies
  • Prepares and presents an orientation to patrons/participants at the beginning of each program session including:
  • General rules and procedures of the program being taught
  • Fitness and safety measures to be followed
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma required
  • Post secondary education preferred. Technical and practical training in Fencing
  • Minimum of 3 years of previous experience instructing individuals of all ages and ability levels in Fencing as well as more than three years of experience learning and developing technique/expertise in the discipline is required
  • Current certifications in Standard First Aid OR Intermediate First Aid with CPR C and AED
  • High Five Certificate and adherence to the principles of Healthy Child Development. (Children ages 6 to 12 years)
  • Certified in NCCP Level 2 theory and practical.
  • Currently active in Fencing
  • Good verbal/written communication skills, leadership skills, customer service skills and sensitivity to interact with a diversity of patrons and staff in a courteous and efficient manner.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures. Excellent customer service skills, strong communication with parents and participants and leadership skills.
  • Ability to teach at a basic level (not competition level) in Fencing
