Job description
Overview

Actalent is seeking an FEA Engineer with experience working on electronics. Location: Kanata, ON. Position Type: 3 Year Contract. Our client is a global leader in advanced space technologies, robotics, satellite systems, and next‑generation mission solutions. We are expanding our Electronics Engineering group and seeking a talented FEA Engineer to help analyze, validate, and optimize electronic assemblies for space missions.

As an FEA Engineer – Electronics, you will be responsible for performing detailed structural, thermal, and coupled multiphysics analyses of electronic components and assemblies used across satellite platforms, robotics systems, and other mission‑critical space hardware. You will work with electrical, mechanical, and thermal engineers to ensure designs meet stringent space‑environment requirements including vibration, shock, thermal cycling, and radiation performance.

This role is ideal for an engineer who loves solving complex problems, enjoys cross‑disciplinary collaboration, and wants to contribute to real hardware flying in space.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform finite element analysis (FEA) on PCBAs, electronic modules, enclosures, connectors, and payload hardware.
  • Conduct structural, modal, thermal, and thermo‑mechanical analyses using industry‑standard tools (e.g., ANSYS, Abaqus, HyperWorks).
  • Evaluate electronic assemblies against launch vehicle environments (random vibration, sine vibration, shock).
  • Analyze thermal performance including conduction, convection (where applicable), and radiation‑based heat transfer.
  • Build, validate, and maintain detailed FEA models of electronic assemblies and system‑level structures.
  • Support design optimization for mass, reliability, manufacturability, and environmental robustness.
  • Collaborate with multi‑disciplinary teams to define requirements, interpret test data, and support design reviews.
  • Prepare clear technical reports, documentation, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support verification and validation activities, including correlation of FEA predictions to test results.
Required Qualifications
  • 7+ years of experience performing FEA on electronics.
  • Strong proficiency in at least one major FEA platform (ANSYS Mechanical, Abaqus, NX Nastran, HyperMesh, etc.).
  • Must be eligible for Canadian government security clearances.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to clearly convey engineering results.
Assets
  • Experience with space or aerospace hardware or high reliability systems.
  • Knowledge of IPC, ECSS, NASA, or MIL‑STD design standards for electronics.
  • Familiarity with thermal desktop, FloTHERM, or CFD tools.
  • Experience correlating analytical models with environmental or thermal test data.
  • Programming or scripting experience (Python, MATLAB, or similar) for automation and model optimization.
