Role Responsibilities
  • Provide technical support to agricultural producers and stakeholders in the southern region for constructing, protecting and maintaining farm water supplies (e.g., dugouts or water wells) for livestock watering and farm site development.
  • Support the growth of a sustainable, competitive agriculture industry by addressing farm water issues including supplies, conservation, drought and variable climate impacts, water quality, treatment and protection.
  • Work with a provincial team of specialists as part of the Farm Water Supply section on projects related to technology transfer, tool development and program development and delivery.
  • Provide direct Farm Water Supply experience is valuable for fit with this position (if applicable).

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide technical advice regarding on-farm water supply system design, construction, management, maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Assess on-farm water management (supply and quality) issues and develop long-term sustainable solutions.
  • Offer advice and assistance to agricultural producers and multi-stakeholder partnerships in developing drought-proofing water sources.
  • Provide support, assistance and technical expertise regarding environmental risk assessment and mitigation options for water-related activities.
  • Evaluate new technologies and equipment for on-farm water supplies.
  • Provide technical assessment of farm water management issues on topics such as dugouts, water wells, livestock watering, cyanobacteria, and water needs for small market gardens.
Qualifications
  • A 2-year diploma in water, agriculture or environmental sciences is required.
  • Plus six years of experience (groundwater or surface water projects, project management, technical assessments, agriculture incentive or education programs, or a related area).
  • A valid Driver’s License is required for travel within Alberta.

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Preference: Practical knowledge and experience planning and developing constructed on-farm water supply systems (dugouts, water wells, spring developments) and knowledge of surface and groundwater systems in southern Alberta.

  • Assets: Familiarity with Alberta’s agriculture industry, production systems, and related legislation, programs and policies affecting agricultural water supplies; strong verbal and written communication of technical information to producers.

  • Office located in Lethbridge: Agriculture Centre, 5401-1 Ave S., Lethbridge, AB.
  • Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week (permanent full time).
  • Monday to Friday (8:15 am – 4:30 pm).
  • Travel: Some travel up to 25% will be required.
