Family Law Legal Assistant

Location: Ottawa, Ontario
Compensation: $55,000–$65,000 (based on experience)

Our client, a well-established law firm in Ottawa, is seeking a Family Law Legal Assistant to join their team. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented professional with family law experience who thrives in a fast-paced, client-focused legal environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide administrative and legal support to family law lawyers
  • Prepare, draft, and format legal documents, including pleadings, affidavits, court forms, correspondence, and briefs
  • File documents with the court (electronic and in-person, as required) and manage court deadlines
  • Coordinate and schedule court appearances, mediations, discoveries, and client meetings
  • Maintain and organize physical and electronic client files
  • Communicate professionally with clients, opposing counsel, court staff, and external parties
  • Track limitation periods and critical dates to ensure compliance with court rules
  • Assist with billing, time entry, and client accounts as required
  • Update clients on procedural matters and respond to general inquiries
Qualifications
  • 2–5 years of experience as a legal assistant, preferably in family law
  • Diploma or certificate in Legal Administration or Law Clerk program preferred
  • Strong working knowledge of Ontario family law procedures and court rules
  • Proficiency with legal practice management software and Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel)
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and multitasking skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with professionalism
  • Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset but not required
