Job summary

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County is seeking a Part-time Facilities Technician to maintain and repair club facilities, grounds, and equipment in Newport County. The role involves hands-on maintenance, safety inspections, and supporting event logistics.

You will work with the Facilities Manager, handle minor repairs, and assist with program setup and emergencies, including after-hours shifts. A HS diploma and valid license are required, with preferred CPO and CPR certifications.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; two years in facility/site maintenance, construction, or grounds keeping preferred.
  • Valid and current driving license; chauffeur’s license preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and with others.
  • Self-starter and organized; able to take guidance and follow supervision.
  • Proficiency in safe use of power tools, heavy and light machinery, and building materials.
  • Willing to assist with fundraising events and support multi-schedule operations.
  • Flexible with evening/weekend shifts as schedules require.
  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO) license preferred; training provided.
  • Pool operations experience (chemical balancing, backwashing, ECT) preferred.
  • CPR/First Aid/AED certification training provided post hire; chauffeur license must be obtained within 90 days.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain grounds and operate equipment (mowers, tractors, chainsaws) safely and efficiently.
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on facilities, equipment, and grounds (plumbing, electrical, carpentry).
  • Carry out janitorial and general maintenance tasks (cleaning, windows, restrooms, dining hall).
  • Dispose of trash, manage recycling, and assist with inventories at season ends.
  • Store equipment safely and conduct regular safety inspections; identify hazards.
  • Assist Facilities Manager and Operations Director with vendors for major repairs.
  • Maintain safety equipment and ensure proper functioning of detectors and emergency lighting.
  • Help set up/break down equipment for programs, events, and activities.
  • Respond to emergencies ( spills, broken equipment, weather issues) and assist campers/members as needed.
  • Support logistics for programs, moving furniture and transporting supplies.

Job description

Under the direction of the Operations Director, assist in the maintenance and repair of the Club’s buildings, grounds, vehicles, equipment and other facilities consistent with the mission and established policies and procedures of the organization.

Job Requirements

  • All staff are expected to assist with our major fundraising events and to help fundraise
  • Staff must be flexible as our schedules change to serve our members – evening and weekends are expected during the year.
  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO) License preferred, training can be provided.
  • Pool operations experience (chemical balancing, backwashing, ECT) preferred.
  • CPR/First Aid/AED certification (training provided post hire).
  • A Chauffeur Driver’s License MUST be obtained in the first 90 days of employment.
Physical and Mental Requirements
  • Maintain grounds, handling equipment such as mower, tractor, chain saws, etc., in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on club facilities, equipment, and grounds, including, but not limited to, plumbing, electrical and carpentry tasks.
  • Perform janitorial and general maintenance duties such as sweeping, scrubbing, waxing floors, washing windows and screens, putting up and taking down screens and storm windows, cleaning bathrooms, and assisting with cleaning dining hall.
  • Dispose of trash and waste and manage recycling
  • Assist in conducting initial and end of season inventories.
  • Store equipment safely.
  • Conduct regular inspections of facilities to identify safety hazards or maintenance needs, ensuring compliance with BGCA, OSHA, ACA and all other regulatory safety standards.
  • Support the Facilities Manager and Operations Director in managing vendors and contractors for larger repairs or maintenance projects.
  • Maintain Safety Equipment (e.g. first aid kits, smoke and CO detectors, emergency lighting) and ensure they are in good working order
  • Performs all duties in accordance with prescribed regulatory compliance guidelines, including local, state and federal as well as American Camp Association accreditation standards.
  • Assist in setting up and breaking down equipment for programs, events and club activities.
  • Respond to immediate facility issues or emergencies such as spills, broken equipment and weather-related concerns.
  • Support logistics for Club programs and events, including moving furniture, setting up rooms, and transporting supplies.
  • Ability to understand and implement safety regulations and procedures
  • Ability, both visual and auditory, to identify safety hazards and monitor guest and staff behavior and enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures
  • Ability to walk, stand, bend and stretch
  • Ability to lift, up to approximately 50 pounds, and occasional lifting of equipment weighing up to approximately 75 pounds may be required.
  • Ability to safely and properly use power tools and equipment
  • Ability to safely drive cars, light trucks, tractors, and other motorized vehicles
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to Club operations.
  • Additional skills with maintenance of transportation fleet, plumbing/electrical skills and/or certification preferred.
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers and club members in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness or injury).
