Job summary

The Yonge Street Mission (YSM) in Toronto is seeking a part-time Evergreen Kitchen Assistant to support meal service and volunteers for 30 hours per week on a 1-year contract. You will work with the Evergreen Kitchen Coordinator to nourish community members, including youth, families, and neighbors in need.

Anticipated Start Date: November 23, 2026 with an anticipated End Date: November 22, 2027. YSM offers a values-based workplace and a comprehensive benefits package.

Qualifications

• Good English communication skills, both oral and written.
• Strong interpersonal skills, conflict resolution skills, and problem solving abilities.
• Able to follow instructions accurately.
• With self‑initiative and ability to work independently or with less supervision.
• Must be 18 years old or older and able to commit to 30 hours a week.
• Food Handler Certification is a requirement.
• Demonstrated personal commitment to YSM’s principles of faith, mission and values.

Responsibilities

• The primary role is to assist the Evergreen Kitchen Coordinator in all tasks involved, so that the cook can provide daily meals to our community members.
• Receiving and lifting of daily deliveries, cleaning dishes, organizing pantry, and serving meals.
• Cultivate excellent working relationships with community members, staff, food donors and suppliers- foster cooperation, effective communication and unity of purpose between food services programs and other Evergreen Services programs.
• Maintain a clean, welcoming, user‑friendly efficient kitchen environment, which is used by multiple groups.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a part‑time Evergreen Kitchen Assistant at the Yonge Street Mission‑Evergreen location for 30 hours per week (4 days/week). This is a 1‑year contract position, with the possibility of extension. If you enjoy providing support to a wide variety of vulnerable youth through serving in the kitchen department, then this is your opportunity! You will develop skills in: working in a kitchen environment, building relationships with volunteers and student placements, and connecting with hard‑to‑reach populations, an environment where we value journeying with and empowering community members towards life goals. The kitchen is a major reason youth value our space as we provide nourishment for them in the journey.

Compensation

YSM offers market competitive rates and will pay a starting wage of $23.15 per hour for this part‑time role, combined with a comprehensive suite of benefits and perks.
