OVERVIEW:
Reporting to the White Buffalo Lodge Supervisor, the Shkaabe positionwill provide oversight in our transitional housing for Indigenous youth in andfrom Child and Family Services care. This includes ensuring site safety andproviding direct support to youth tenants, ages 16-29.
KEYRESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide on-site support for youth living intransitional housing to enhance and pursue mental, emotional, physical, andspiritual wellness.
- Provide emotional support to youth throughconversation, smudging, referrals, etc.
- Opportunity for evening shift to plan and offeron-site programming and recreational activities for youth such as movie nights,cooking, sewing, beading, etc.
- Where applicable, complete house duties such asmeal planning or prep, light housekeeping, cooking for youth, etc.
- Check emails daily for instructions on youth tocheck in with; check in with youth as required and report back via email forday staff to follow up.
- Conduct building walk throughs throughout shift.
- Conduct periodic check ins with youth; engage with youththroughout shift.
- Intervene in situations of concern such as noisecomplaints, unauthorized guests, suspicion of substance misuse.
- Intervene in crises in a calm and effective manner,including supporting youth to access appropriate and immediate resources suchas community crisis response resources.
- Attend emergency resources with youth, whereappropriate and required.
- Report emergencies to the appropriate authorities.
- Monitor cameras and report suspicious activity tosecurity team.
- Conduct hourly check-ins with other support workers to ensure team safety.
- Check email/communication logs at the start of eachshift.
- Maintain accurate and complete shift logs, buildingwalk through logs, and incident reports.
- Attend training as directed and participate in teammeetings when requested.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Trainingin the social services field is considered an asset but not required; acombination of previous work experience, lived experience and training will beconsidered.
- FirstAid/CPR, ASIST, and/or Naloxone training required; additional training,including trauma and crisis training, an asset.
- Abilityto walk multiple flights of stairs required.
- Stronginterpersonal skills and ability to develop effective working relationships.
- Experiencewith child welfare and/or youth aging out of care, transitional housing, anasset.
- Excellentoral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrate knowledgeand/or understanding of First Nations perspectives, culture, and philosophies.
- Mustmaintain a high level of confidentiality.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Must be resourceful with a high attention to detail.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and effectively managemultiple priorities.
- Must have a clear child and adult abuse registrychecks, criminal record check with vulnerable sector search and Prior Contact Check,required.
- Valid driver's license and a reliable vehicle with asatisfactory driver abstract, required.
