Job Description
We are currently looking for a Senior Data Engineer - Solutions Designer / Modeler with a passion for turning disparate streams of data into organized and actionable analytics services and insights. As a Data Engineer on the Data Engineering and Operations team, you will be joining a group of hardworking and savvy innovators who has made it their mission to find new ways to glean value out of rapidly increasing volumes of operational data in Canadian Operations.
Role Summary
Working within a diverse and motivated team of analytics professionals, the Senior Data Engineer will be instrumental in designing, implementing, and maintaining data pipelines and infrastructure to support our organization’s data-driven decision-making processes, while also guiding and mentoring other Data Engineers.
What will you do
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable data pipelines using AWS Glue, Kafka, and Step Functions
- Implement and optimize ETL processes using tools like SSIS, Informatica, or Talend
- Guide and mentor Data Engineers on best practices for ETL development and data sourcing
- Create and maintain data models to support business intelligence and analytics initiatives
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand data requirements and deliver solutions
- Ensure data quality, security, and compliance with industry standards and regulations
- Troubleshoot data-related issues and implement solutions
- Stay current with emerging technologies and best practices in data engineering
What you need to succeed
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or related field
- 5-10 years of experience in ETL design, modeling, and development
- Strong proficiency in SQL and Python programming
- Experience with AWS services, particularly Glue, Step Functions, and other data-related services
- Expertise in data warehousing concepts and methodologies
- Proficiency in ETL tools (e.g., Informatica, Talend, SSIS)
- Experience with various database systems and data formats
- Familiarity with Kafka and stream processing concepts
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
- Strong communication and leadership abilities
- Experience with big data technologies such as Hadoop, Spark, or Hive
- Knowledge of data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI)
- Familiarity with agile development methodologies
- AWS certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Data Analytics - Specialty)
Preferred skills
- Strong oral and written communication skills with experience in relating complex concepts to non-technical users, including presentation and storytelling with data
- Visual design expertise with a solid understanding of the best practices around dashboard and visual perception.
Unique Requirements
- As a condition of the role, the successful candidate must obtain a Government of Canada Reliability Status security clearance through Sun Life in advance of the start date
- Must be able to satisfactorily complete applicable background checks prior to the start date and during employment, in accordance with Sun Life’s policies and practices.
