Job summary

Valard Construction is seeking an Estimator in Ontario to join our Distribution group. The role involves compiling cost estimates for electrical power distribution, evaluating materials, labour, and equipment, and coordinating with subcontractors to prepare competitive bids.

Reporting to the Lead Estimator, you will work to win contracts by delivering high-quality estimates that balance cost and value. Prior EPC/utility project experience is preferred and accuracy is essential.

Qualifications

• Experience in electrical power distribution construction estimating.
• Ability to compile cost estimates, assess materials, labour and equipment.
• Ability to analyze quotes from sub-contractors and suppliers for tenders.
• Support competitive tender packages while ensuring profitability.
• Knowledge of estimating practices, techniques and equipment, including indirect/ conceptual estimating.

Responsibilities

• Develop estimates for projects including site visit, take-off, pricing, and submission.
• Assemble estimates from multiple sources into a final bid.
• Review outsourced estimates with engineering support.
• Incorporate historical cost data into the cost model.

Job description

Our Distribution group is currently looking to add an Estimator to our growing team, based in Ontario. We are open to this being based in the GTA (Vaughan), Hanover, Timmins or potentially other locations in Ontario.

Reporting to the Lead Estimator, we are seeking a technically strong resource with knowledge and experience in Electrical Power Distribution Construction with the ability to compile cost estimates, assess material, labour and equipment required, analyze quotes from sub-contractors and suppliers as well as support competitive tender packages, while ensuring that the contract can be carried out profitably. Estimators work to provide the best price that will win the contract in a competitive bidding situation. The best price isn't always the lowest one, and clients now award contracts based on quality of the service offered, as well as cost.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Develop estimates on selected projects consisting of project site visit, quantity take-off, pricing, and presentation of the estimate for cost engineering and management review
• Assemble estimates from various sources into a complete and final estimate for the company with Engineering support as required
• Review and validate outsourced estimates with support from engineering
• Review and incorporate historical data from estimates received, contracts awarded by the EPC Contractor and final actual project costs into Valard's cost model
• Format estimates in Owners Reporting format
• Review and understand Design Basis, Engineering Design Documents, and Basis of Estimate
• Prepare written deliverables for bid submission (i.e. understanding of work, assumptions, execution plans)
• Provide estimating input on complex “conceptual” projects
• Provide guidance for non-estimating personnel on their estimating related requirements
• Attend and assist in project planning sessions and team meetings to provide estimating input
• Interface and communicate effectively (written and oral) with the estimating team, with all levels of management, clients and industry contacts
• Develop relationships with subcontractors and suppliers for pricing within estimates
• Develop or assist in the development of general and project specific plans for execution, sequencing, and logistics (including, when required, construction and work procedures for specific activities related to a bid)
• Develop or assist in the development of preliminary project schedules

• Journeyman Electrician, Powerline Technician, Post-Secondary education in Electrical Engineering, or other related education
• Utility construction industry experience with demonstrated estimating exposure
• Demonstrated understanding of Estimating Software and technical knowledge of estimating practices, techniques and equipment, including indirect and conceptual estimating techniques and theories
• Knowledge of construction costs and budgets and the ability to develop a project schedule
• Understanding of construction documents, ability to assess the level of completeness and the ability to read drawings and specifications

Preferred Skills / Qualifications

• Technical knowledge of utility / powerline construction
• Demonstrated experience with InEight Estimating Software
• Estimating experience projects ranging from $1M to $50M
• 3 years industry specific estimating experience
• Experience in EPC estimating / execution and preparing written deliverables for bid submissions

This position offers a base salary range of $90,000 - $130,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.
