Job summary

The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board is seeking an ESL Instructor to provide English as a Second Language instruction to adult learners, including newcomers to Canada, government assisted refugees, asylum seekers and others whose first language is not English. Classes located within OCDSB elementary, and high school sites and administrative buildings.

Under the direction of the Continuing Education Officer, provides instruction to Adult learners.

Qualifications

• TESL Ontario Certification and knowledge of ESL education environments are required.
• Organizational and time-management skills to juggle tasks with short timelines.
• Strong interpersonal and communication abilities to engage diverse communities.

Responsibilities

• Provide ESL instruction to adult learners, including newcomers and refugees; classes located at OCDSB sites.
• Deliver effective instruction with classroom management and assessment; maintain classroom atmosphere of respect.
• Present information clearly; maintain relevant certifications and adapt to learners’ needs.

ESL Instructor

Overview

Under the direction of the Continuing Education Officer, provides instruction to Adult learners.

Role and Responsibilities

Provide English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction to adult learners, including newcomers to Canada, government assisted refugees, asylum seekers and others whose first language is not English. Many of the adults in the program may also have learning and other disabilities. Classes located within OCDSB elementary, and high school sites and administrative buildings.

Qualifications

TESL Ontario Certification. Knowledge of relevant Board policies and procedures, Adult Education including English as a Second Language (ESL), education environment and the Canadian Language Benchmarks, and Board procedures and operations; organization and time management skills required to prioritize work and juggle multiple tasks and conflicting priorities with short timelines;interpersonal, and communication skills required to exchange and clarify information; oral communication and listening skills required for understanding and communicating effectively with diverse communities; understand and respond to inquiries usingtact, diplomacy and discretion when dealingwithcolleagues and students;presentation skills delivering instruction;ability to develop a classroom atmosphere of respect, trust and cooperation; maintenance of all relevant certifications.

This knowledge would normally be obtained through completion of TESL Ontario Certification from a recognized college or university; or Ontario Teaching Certification and Ministry of Education recognized ESL qualifications (CTESL; ESL Part(s) I and II); or Ontario Teaching Certification and ESL instructional experience

Pay Expectations

$37.04 to $46.84 per hour
