Job description
DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

Environment, Social & Governance Risk Management team under Non-Financial Risk Management (NFRM) is responsible for the identification, assessment, remediation and reporting of climate risk within TDBG's credit portfolio. The group is accountable for ensuring that the risks associated with climate change are incorporated into the broader assessment of how TD's credit products and exposures fit within TD's Risk Appetite. ESG Risk Management provides strategic guidance, advice and independent challenge to support TD in achieving its climate objectives in the broader context of meeting its strategic objectives.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Reporting to the Senior Manager, ESG Credit Risk, the co-op students will support the development of AI-use cases that can be applied for effective climate risk management of catastrophic risk within TD's Retail and Non-Retail lending portfolios across the Banks' global footprint.

Climate change is rapidly emerging as a key risk factor for the financial sector, requiring banks to evaluate its impacts with the same rigor as traditional financial risks. At the same time, artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming how organizations process complex data and enhance decision-making. This project offers the opportunity to explore the intersection of climate science, finance, and technology by supporting our ESG Risk Management team, in partnership with Layer 6, design practical use cases for AI in catastrophic risk management.

Over a project period, students will research industry practices and academic approaches, identify opportunities where AI can add value, investigate AI techniques such as predictive modelling, natural language processing, scenario generation, or generative AI, and develop tailored use cases relevant to a lending business context. Possible applications include portfolio stress testing, climate scenario analysis, pricing, or key risk indicators and trends. The goal is to bridge theory and practice—combining academic research with real-world financial risk considerations.

By the end of the project, students will deliver a detailed use case proposal supported by research and analysis, along with a final presentation to the bank’s ESG Risk leadership team. The project offers hands‑on exposure to one of the fastest-growing areas of financial risk management, professional mentorship, and the opportunity to contribute to shaping how Canadian banks integrate climate risk into business model.

  • Strong communication skills: clear articulation of the risks and opportunities; facilitate effective discussion on complex issues.
