Equipment Operator

The Equipment Operator is primarily responsible for operating the municipal grader to maintain and improve municipal roads. This includes year-round grading for road safety, snow removal, and surface maintenance. The operator ensures quality services to ratepayers, performs preventative maintenance on the grader and other equipment, and adheres to municipal policies, procedures, and safety standards.

Monday to Friday – 40 hours per week
Must be available to work evenings, weekends and statutory holidays as required

Titles of Positions reporting to this Position

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operates the municipal grader as the primary duty to maintain safe road conditions, including grading gravel roads, shaping road surfaces, and ensuring proper drainage.
  • Operates other equipment such as tractors, backhoes, loader etc. as needed.
  • Drives truck to transport crew and equipment to work site
  • Operates the grader and or tractor with equipped with snowplow and blower units for snow removal during winter months, ensuring roads remain accessible and safe.
  • Drives tractor with mower attachment to cut grass along rights-of-way
  • Maintain accurate work records, including hours of operation and materials used
  • Perform daily maintenance and safety checks on assigned equipment
  • Report unsafe road conditions, hazards, or equipment issues to the supervisor
  • Removes potential hazards from traveled road, shoulder and ditch and by “brushing” and chipping obstructive trees and bushes from within the road allowance or right-of-way
  • Mowing of grass in ditches, around guardrails, bridges, etc.
  • Participates in municipal road construction projects as required
  • Assist with manual labor tasks when equipment is not in use
  • Ensures safe, effective use and regular maintenance of any tools or equipment and performs regular maintenance of vehicles and equipment including greasing, fluids level controls and regular interior and exterior cleaning of equipment
  • Required to perform regular cleaning and maintenance at the rural public works shop
  • Will be required to assist in the urban or water and wastewater departments as necessary
    Provide work order updates and reports through All-Net Service Tracker
  • Complete basic administrative report, logs and forms
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Identifying and resolving issues and concerns in a timely and efficient manner.

Educational Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or three to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Heavy Equipment Operator Certification would be considered an asset
  • Class 1 or 3 would be considered an asset
  • Minimum five years operating experience within a Public Works Department or related field.
