Job summary

City of Medicine Hat is seeking an Environmental Specialist to join our team on a permanent, full‑time, on‑site basis, starting at $91,000 CAD per year with relocation assistance. You will lead regulatory compliance, environmental stewardship, and public safety across City operations.

You will assess environmental risks, coordinate ESAs and remediation activities, and report on NPRI, greenhouse gas, and other regulatory programs.

Qualifications

• Post-secondary degree or diploma in an environmental-related discipline.
• Environmental professional designation in Alberta is an asset.
• Five (5) years of relevant work experience.
• Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
• Valid Class 5 Driver's License required with clean driving record.
• Safety Sensitive position; pre-employment drug screen including cannabis testing.

Responsibilities

• Act as the primary environmental advisor to City departments and projects.
• Interpret environmental data, assess risk, and recommend practical, defensible solutions.
• Advise on environmental incidents and support emergency response as required.
• Communicate clearly and effectively with internal teams, regulators, and external stakeholders.
• Model professionalism, integrity, and a commitment to continuous improvement in all environmental practices.
