Job Description

The Opportunity:

You will assist with the regulatory coordination of information from project team members and consultants for the preparation of Applications/Authorization/Plans and with the preparation of project information for presentation to regulators and stakeholders. You can contribute to the success of Canadian Natural’s operations by understanding and explaining leading edge environmental regulations.

  • Job location: Calgary, AB – Head Office (4 months) & Fort McMurray, AB (4 months)
  • Shift schedule: 5 days on, 2 days on, 8 hours/day (Monday-Friday) in Calgary & 4 days on, 3 days off, 10 hours/day (Monday – Thursday) in Fort McMurray
  • Term lengths: 4 or 8 months
  • Term start: May 2026
  • Safety sensitive position: Yes

Key Accountabilities:

  • Assist with the coordination of information from regulatory team members and consultants for the preparation of Applications/Authorization/Plans/Reports, or helping to generate responses to supplemental information requests from Regulators during the regulatory review process
  • Assist in data compilation, statistical analysis for annual/quarterly reports, or applications
  • Assist in the preparation of reports and documentation to regulatory agencies to fulfill Indigenous consultation and engagement requirements for regulatory applications
  • Assist with the preparation of project information for presentation to local stakeholders, including Indigenous communities to facilitate communication on environmental and regulatory matters
  • Assist operations regulatory/environmental staff in managing and execution of field related tasks at Horizon
  • Assist tracking of approval conditions to ensure on-going regulatory compliance utilizing a software solution
  • Acquire a thorough understanding of regulations, policies and regulatory processes pertinent to heavy oil development applications and approvals under the jurisdiction of, Provincial and Federal regulatory agencies
  • Assist with the monitoring of regulatory publications and review of project decisions (e.g. approvals and court decisions) on a regular basis to keep department apprised of new requirements and changes to applicable regulatory requirements

What You Bring to The Role:

  • Currently enrolled in your 3rd or 4th year of a program in Engineering, Science, Forestry or Environmental Science or the equivalent of Political Science, Law and Society Program
  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, knowledge of statistical programs would be an asset (i.e. Mini Tab software)
  • Attention to detail to generate high quality work requiring minimal revisions
  • Strong written communication skills to review and appropriately condense key elements of external correspondence and regulatory decisions
  • Strong organizational skills required to coordinate and schedule multiple, concurrent activities related to report and application submissions and reporting to stakeholders
