Job description

Main Purpose and Function

The Landfill Gas Maintenance Technician is primarily responsible for the efficient operation of the landfill gas control system at the Vancouver Landfill in Delta. The position maximizes gas collection and utilization while minimizing the risk of landfill fire, emission of greenhouse gases/odours, and ensuring the safety of staff and the public. Due care and attention are required during data collection to identify problems and make operational adjustments or minor repairs to reduce fire or explosion risk. This position is based at the Vancouver Landfill in Delta, BC.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducts landfill gas well field monitoring including data logging for the well field, manifolds, and flaring station.
  • Performs routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibration of monitoring instruments (e.g., Landtec GEM5000, personal gas monitors).
  • Installs, operates, and maintains the landfill gas well field leachate pumping system.
  • Conducts routine field monitoring of liquid levels, temperature probes (permanent and down well), pipeline inspection camera operation, data interpretation, and equipment inspections.
  • Performs routine and reactive maintenance on all field equipment related to the landfill gas system.
  • Analyzes, interprets, and presents data to other Landfill Gas Maintenance Technicians and landfill management staff, identifying trends or anomalies and recommending follow‑on work.
  • Liaises with contractors, other City forces, and consultants who provide contracting and professional services regarding the operation of the system.
  • Manages landfill gas data, using specialized software for analysis.
  • Reads, reviews, and updates safe operating procedures related to landfill gas tasks.
  • Conducts presentations and tours of the landfill and/or landfill gas system for staff and the public as needed.
  • Participates in standby rotations and responds to callouts to maintain flare station operation after hours.
  • Backfills for GPS survey technician for minimal periods.
  • Backfills for other landfill gas technicians during vacation or absence.
  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Completion of a program in Environmental Protection Technology, Environmental Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of gas collection and sampling techniques.
  • Experience working at landfills and/or waste management facilities.
  • Knowledge of computer programs, including Microsoft Office suite.
  • Strong interpersonal and written/ oral communication skills with the ability to liaise with staff at all levels.
  • Ability to perform detailed work accurately and assess data independently for operational decisions.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and perform duties with minimal instruction while meeting scheduling requirements.
  • Skill in the care, maintenance, operation, calibration, and simple repair of field equipment and apparatus.
  • Ability to perform physical work outdoors in all weather conditions for extended periods.
  • A valid BC Class 5 driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Ability to collect, compile, analyze, and interpret data.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to use hand tools and handheld power tools.
  • Experience and training in working with explosive gases, surveying (e.g., GPS, level instruments), and conducting water or vapor quality monitoring.
  • Experience using handheld measurement equipment such as Landtec GEM, Landtec SEM5000, or other landfill gas analyzers with data logging capability and personal gas monitors.
  • Canada Safety Council UTV/ATV Operator Certificate or equivalent.
