Job summary

WSP is seeking an Environmental Planner to help integrate environmental considerations into transportation, energy, and infrastructure projects across Western Canada. This early-career to intermediate professional will work with engineers, planners, scientists, Indigenous communities, and regulators.

You will apply regulatory knowledge, prepare planning documentation, and help manage environmental risks while supporting stakeholder engagement and field visits as needed.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in environmental planning, urban planning, environmental studies, geography, natural resource management or related discipline.
• Familiarity with municipal, provincial, and federal environmental legislation, regulatory processes, and permitting requirements.
• Strong technical writing skills with experience preparing reports, permit applications, planning studies, or regulatory submissions.
• Ability to identify environmental risks and opportunities and coordinate with technical specialists across multiple disciplines.
• Strong organizational and project coordination skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
• Excellent communication and relationship-building skills for working with clients, Indigenous communities, regulators, and multidisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

• Support the planning and delivery of transportation, energy, municipal infrastructure, land development, and other multidisciplinary projects.
• Apply an inquiry-based approach to understand project objectives, identify environmental opportunities and constraints, and help define project scope.
• Contribute to environmental evaluations by identifying potential environmental risks and coordinating with environmental specialists and subject matter experts.
• Interpret and apply municipal, provincial, and federal environmental policies, regulations, and permitting requirements.
• Prepare environmental planning documentation, permit applications, environmental constraints assessments, technical memoranda, and regulatory submissions.
• Collaborate with engineers, planners, scientists, Indigenous communities, clients, municipalities, and regulatory agencies to integrate environmental considerations into project decisions.
• Support stakeholder engagement initiatives and environmental planning discussions that contribute to sustainable project outcomes.
• Participate in occasional site visits to support environmental assessments, project due diligence, and planning activities.

The Skills That Set You Apart

• Bachelor's degree in Environmental Planning, Urban Planning, Environmental Studies, Geography, Natural Resource Management, or a related discipline.
• Approximately 1-5 years of relevant environmental planning, permitting, land use planning, or environmental consulting experience.
• Familiarity with municipal, provincial, and federal environmental legislation, regulatory processes, and permitting requirements.
• Strong technical writing skills with experience preparing professional reports, permit applications, planning studies, or regulatory submissions.
• Ability to identify environmental risks and opportunities and coordinate effectively with technical specialists across multiple disciplines.
• Strong organizational and project coordination skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
• Excellent communication and relationship-building skills for working with clients, Indigenous communities, regulators, and multidisciplinary teams.
• Professional designations such as EP®, RPP, R.T.Ag., P.Ag., R.P.Bio., P.Biol., or other related credentials are considered assets but are not required.
• Valid driver's license and ability to undertake occasional travel and site visits as required.

Compensation

• AB, BC, NT, NU, SK & YT: $56,500 - $75,900
• MB & ON: $51,600 - $72,000
• NB, NL, NS, PE & QC: $51,100 - $68,800

The final salary awarded for this role may vary from the above range based on several factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.
