Job description

Salary Range: $77,000 - $98,000 annually

Contract: 12 month term (Full-time)

Who is design for?

At hcma, we’re asking big questions about how we can help solve some of the world’s wicked challenges, through design. We create buildings, brands and shared experiences that connect people – all driven by a genuine spirit of curiosity and care.

We are interdisciplinary by intention. Designers, architects, researchers, strategists and others, all working together to create the lasting change we want to see in our communities.

And that’s where (we hope!) you come in.

About the Role

We’re looking for an Environmental Graphic Designer to join our Communication Design Team, with a focus on environmental graphics, wayfinding, signage, and placemaking within built-environment projects.

You’ll collaborate closely with both communication designers and architectural teams, helping shape projects from early strategy through to fabrication and installation. You’ll bring creative leadership, technical depth, and a strong understanding of materials and fabrication along with a passion for designing inclusive, accessible, and sustainable environments.

This role offers the opportunity to elevate environmental graphic design within hybrid architectural projects and help grow our profile both internally and externally.

What You’ll Do
  • Contribute to research, strategy development, and site assessments
  • Develop wayfinding systems, signage programs, placemaking identities, and environmental graphics
  • Create and present strong conceptual narratives to internal teams and clients
  • Collaborate with architects and consultants to integrate graphics into drawing sets
  • Review shop drawings and conduct site visits to ensure design intent is realized
  • Engage fabricators and vendors for costing and technical input
  • Mentor junior team members and contribute to team growth and knowledge-sharing
  • Support business development and profile-building efforts where appropriate
What You’ll Bring
  • Undergraduate or Master’s Degree in Communication Design, Graphic Design, Interior Design, Industrial Design, Architecture or similar
  • 5+ years of experience in environmental graphic design, from concept through construction documentation
  • A creative flair and strong creative voice paired with technical confidence
  • Deep knowledge of signage systems, materials, and fabrication processes
  • Experience coordinating with architectural teams and reading drawing sets
  • Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite; CAD proficiency (Rhino is an asset)
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Strategic thinking and a high level of organization and attention to detail
Compensation and Benefits

In addition to a competitive salary, we offer:

  • Extended health and dental coverage
  • Paid vacation + firm holidays
  • A creative, collaborative and lively studio environment and culture
  • Office and firm-wide social events
