Job summary

A leading engineering consulting firm in Quebec is seeking an experienced Environmental Geochemist to join their national environmental team. You will be responsible for performing and supervising geochemical characterization studies, assessing acid rock drainage, and predicting water quality impacts from tailings. A degree in Geology or related fields and 10+ years of relevant experience are required. A flexible work schedule and emphasis on team collaboration are part of the company culture.

Qualifications

  • Experience in contaminant hydrology or hydrogeochemistry is a plus.
  • Advanced English proficiency for collaboration.

Overview

Join to apply for the Environmental Geochemist role at BBA Consultants.

We are looking for an experienced Environmental Geochemist to take on a key role within our national environmental team to help our mining and industrial clientele.

Responsibilities
  • Performing and supervising geochemical characterization studies (ore, tailings, or mine waste rock) and contributing to closure planning
  • Assessing the acid rock drainage (ARD) and neutral drainage potential, along with contaminant leaching risks
  • Predicting water quality from mine tailings storage facilities
  • Defining acceptable mine tailings management methods to prevent or mitigate impacts on water quality and the environment
  • Applying a strong understanding of Québec, Canadian, and international regulations related to water management, mine tailings, and mine site reclamation
  • Selecting samples and designing, interpreting, and supervising static and kinetic laboratory and field tests, using sound knowledge of chemistry and mineralogy
  • Understanding and contributing to the design of passive treatment systems for surface water at mine sites
  • Overseeing or supporting geochemical modeling studies using established tools and software
  • Support the professional development of team members within the Environment–Geochemistry discipline
  • Participate in project meetings, providing technical input in your area of expertise
  • Contribute to drafting proposals and developing service offerings

Summary Of Certifications And Job Requirements
  • University degree in Geology, Geological Engineering or Inorganic Chemistry with a specialization in Mineralogy or in Environmental Geochemistry
  • At least 10 years of experience in Applied Geochemistry in the fields of environment and mine site characterization and remediation, with some experience in contaminant hydrology or hydrogeochemistry
  • Familiarity with interpreting static and kinetic testing as well as with key geochemical modelling software, such as WATEQ4F, MINTEQ/MINTEQA2, MINQL, PHREEQE/PHREEQM, HSC Chemistry, CHESS
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills
  • Excellent teamwork skills within multidisciplinary engineering teams composed mainly of geotechnical engineers, hydrogeologists and environmental specialists
  • Advanced level of English to collaborate effectively with BBA offices and/or clients outside Québec. The frequency of English use may range from occasional to daily, depending on ongoing projects
