Job Description
NPE is seeking an Environmental Biologist. This will be found in a skilled and experienced individual with strong, technical, leadership, project management, communication, and business development skills who is eager to assume a key role within this well established firm. The company offers a wide diversity of projects and opportunities to make a difference within the environmental sector. Project work is located primarily in the Lower Mainland, West Van to Hope BC, with occasional projects in other parts of BC. This position involves a combination of field work and office work.
Responsibilities
- A positive attitude and the ability to be flexible as part of a diverse group of biologists
- Project management
- Ability to assemble and lead teams in multidisciplinary, multi-firm work situations
- Project lead and/or project oversight/Q.A for assigned projects
- Willing to do out of town work on occasion
- Project coordination and client liaison
- Ensure practical application of sound science, appropriate expertise, resources, and quality control measures to ensure timely and efficient completion of projects
- Mentoring junior staff
- Assist in company management and development
- As part of the project management team, participate in identifying new opportunities, improving company operations, and maintaining service quality and effectiveness through innovation, research, and strategy
- Represent the company in a technical and business capacity in the field, at project meetings and at conferences
- Prepare reports and permits either individually or as part of a team, as and when required
- Conduct various field work including various field assessments and surveys
- Prepare proposals and work actively in business development; and
- Develop and maintain effective working relations with colleagues, clients, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders.
Knowledge and Qualifications
Mandatory Qualifications and Experience
- 5+ years project experience in environmental consulting
- Registered Professional Biologist (R.P. Bio.) in good standing with the BC College of Applied Biologists or relevant similar professional designation, or eligible for registration
- Strong professional report writing experience (writing samples required)
- 2+ Years client facing project management experience
- Independent field work expertise
- Class 5 driver license
Desirable Knowledge and Soft Skills
- Sound fisheries knowledge and experience
- Experience in writing and reviewing reports that meet federal, provincial, and regional environmental regulatory requirements
- Team member management
- Strong organizational, interpersonal and time management skills
- A working knowledge of British Columbia and Canadian environmental regulations, guidelines standards and permitting processes
- Broad base of knowledge pertaining to environmental and ecological principles relevant to BC with an emphasis on aquatic and fish habitats
- Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources management, leadership techniques, project management and marketing
- Excellent verbal, listening and written communication skills
Desirable Qualifications/Certifications
- Electrofishing experience and certification
- Hydro-acoustic monitoring and/or side scan sonar monitoring experience
- Additional certifications such a: First Aid, Environmental Monitoring, Sediment and Erosion Control, RAPR
- Phase 1 and Phase 2 contaminated sites assessments and reporting
- Experience working with First Nations as clients and/or partners, and
- A desire to take on additional roles in the company, e.g., seasonal staff recruitment, equipment manager, in house computer support etc.
- Working knowledge of GIS, AutoCAD, or similar
Compensation
- From $36/hr - depending on skills and experience
- Full-time position with potential for overtime
- Eligible for Benefits and Dental plan after 6 months
- Annual Christmas Bonus
