Job summary

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, environmental science, ecology, forestry, geography, natural resource management, or a related discipline, plus 2+ years of related experience.
  • Registration/eligibility for BC professional association preferred, RP Bio credential is an asset.
  • Strong organizational, coordination, and communication skills; able to manage multiple files and deadlines.

  • Oversee regulatory engagement, screening, scoping, impact and cumulative-effects assessment, and mitigation.

About the Role

Under the direction of the Rights & Title Director, the Environmental Assessment Coordinator leads and coordinates environmental assessments for proposed projects in Snuneymuxw Territory and marine areas, with particular attention to addressing cumulative effects and the protection of Snuneymuxw rights, title, interests, snuw’uyulh, and knowledge systems. The position supports sustainable resource management informed by Snuneymuxw snuw’uyulh, collaborates with the Negotiation Team, coordinates related projects and initiatives, and provides analysis, engagement, monitoring, reporting, and operational support to advance departmental and organizational priorities.

What You’ll Do (Highlights)
  • Support the implementation of the Snuneymuxw Sarlequun Treaty of 1854 and the protection and advancement of Snuneymuxw rights, title, interests, teachings, and knowledge systems.
  • Lead and manage Snuneymuxw environmental assessments for proposed projects in Snuneymuxw Territory and marine areas, including screening, scoping, impact and cumulative-effects assessment, mitigation, report preparation and review, licensing, monitoring, and follow‑up.
  • Oversee and track environmental assessments conducted by the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office, the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada, and other regulatory bodies; prepare Snuneymuxw comments, responses, mitigation measures, and accommodation recommendations.
  • Lead engagement relating to statutory, regulatory, municipal, and other authorizations connected with environmental assessments and natural resource matters across levels of government and with external stakeholders and partners.
  • Collaborate with the Rights & Title Director, Lands and Natural Resources staff, and other departments on implementation of environmental assessment‑related processes and on strategic priorities and outcomes related to environmental assessments.
  • Provide project and management support to environmental assessments in dynamic and collaborative ways to support the strategic goals of Chief and Council and the Department;
  • Monitor compliance with environmental terms and conditions in agreements, permits, leases, licences, monitoring plans, and management plans; coordinate follow‑up and corrective actions as required;
  • Coordinate additional departmental and cross-functional projects, from planning and scheduling through implementation, budget tracking, risk management, reporting, evaluation, and close‑out.
  • Gather, organize, analyze, and maintain complex environmental and project data, records, correspondence, commitments, and decisions using sound information‑management practices.
  • Develop scopes of work, support procurement, and manage the work and deliverables of contractors and consultants.
What You Bring
  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, environmental science, ecology, forestry, geography, natural resource management, or a related discipline, plus at least two years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant experience.
  • Registration, or eligibility for registration within six months of employment, as a fully licensed professional with an applicable British Columbia professional association is preferred.
  • A Registered Professional Biologist (R.P.Bio.) credential, or eligibility to obtain the credential, is considered an asset.
  • Strong organizational and project‑coordination skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple concurrent files, deadlines, and changing operational requirements.
  • Excellent verbal, written, facilitation, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and the ability to learn and use environmental, project‑tracking, records‑management, mapping, and other work‑related systems.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement, initiative, discretion, and a proactive approach with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work for extended periods at a computer and perform detailed document and data review.
  • Ability to attend meetings and conduct site visits in office, community, outdoor, marine, and field settings, including variable weather and terrain.
