JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE : Engineering Technologist

COMPANY : Niagara-on-the-Lake Hydro

REPORTING TO : Vice-President Operations

ORIGINAL DATE : October 2025

Due to department expansion, Niagara-on-the-Lake Hydro (NOTL Hydro) has an opening for an Engineering Technician. This would be an excellent opportunity for a new or experienced technologist looking for the wide range of responsibilities a smaller LDC offers.

Position Summary

Under the general direction of the VP Operations and working collaboratively as a team with the other Engineering Technologists, the successful candidate will play an active role in daily operations of NOTL Hydro’s engineering department. We are seeking a well-organized person with excellent communication skills and with an aptitude of using automated and computer processes to manage the tasks of the department.

Responsibilities of the position
  • Prepare capital designs for system upgrades and expansion
  • Prepare equipment approval sheets for electrical distribution equipment in compliance with O.Reg.22 / 04.
  • Update NOTL Hydro’s book of standards and cost estimating system to reflect any changes and additions.
  • Review joint use and third-party attachments to ensure compliance with Ont. Reg. 22 / 04.
  • Assist in developing maintenance or replacement plans for NOTL Hydro owned assets.
  • Monitor technological advances and assist in developing NOTL Hydro’s Smart Grid projects.
  • Model proposed new loads or generation and perform load flow and short circuit analysis to ensure optimal configuration of NOTL Hydro’s distribution system.
  • Prepare connection cost estimates and offers to connect for new commercial & generator requests that will connect to NOTL Hydro’s system.
  • Other tasks as assigned.
Education, Training and Personal Attributes

The successful candidate must possess the following qualities and qualification :

  • Secondary School Graduation Diploma – Minimum of Grade 12
  • Valid G Ontario Driver’s License with a clean Driver’s Abstract.
  • Ability to read, write and interpret utility systems construction drawings and supporting documents.
  • Proven ability to work effectively and safely in a team setting and follow instructions by peers.
  • Good communication skills both orally and written, including ability to maintain good logs and other records.
  • Good knowledge of computer applications.
  • Good interpersonal skills especially dealing with customers.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage department budgets and job costing on specific projects.
Asset Qualifications

The following qualifications would be an asset :

  • University Degree or College Diploma in Electrical Engineering or related.
  • Experience with ESRI’s ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS online is an asset.
  • Familiar with AutoCAD.
  • Knowledge of SCADA systems.
  • Occupational Health & Safety Act, ESA Ontario Reg. 22 / 04, Highway Traffic Act, WHMIS, CPR, First Aid and all other applicable legislation.

Starting wage will be based on experience ranging from $34.83 to $49.76 / hr with a 40-hour work week in accordance with our Collective Agreement. This is an in-office position.
