Position Summary
Universal Matter is seeking an experienced Engineering Project Manager (EPM) to lead the technical execution and delivery of capital projects, process equipment installations, industrial utilities upgrades, and maintenance engineering initiatives across a rapidly scaling operation. This role blends hands‑on project management, engineering leadership, and technical oversight. Early on, you’ll act as both the engineering authority and project driver—overseeing the scope, schedule, budget, and risk management while ensuring strong technical execution. Key Responsibilities
- Own engineering solutions for capital projects and maintenance engineering initiatives from concept through commissioning.
- Translate operational and manufacturing needs into engineering requirements, specifications, and deliverables.
- Develop engineering standards, design documentation, and as‑built packages.
- Provide technical guidance across mechanical, process, electrical, controls, and industrial utilities systems.
- Lead design reviews, value engineering, and equipment selection activities.
- Ensure full compliance with ISO, CSA, OSHA / OHSA, and internal safety and quality systems.
- Manage full project lifecycle—scope, cost control, scheduling, risk assessment, and stakeholder communication.
- Lead external engineering firms (EPC / EPCM), contractors, and suppliers to performance, safety, and cost targets.
- Support procurement with RFQs, bid analysis, vendor evaluation, and contract coordination.
- Oversee construction, installation, commissioning, and start‑up activities; resolve field issues promptly.
- Provide accurate project reporting, cost tracking, and mitigation planning.
- Improve equipment reliability, uptime, and lifecycle performance.
- Lead or support root cause analysis (RCA) and corrective action implementation.
- Contribute to CMMS, Reliability‑Centered Maintenance (RCM), and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Build scalable engineering workflows and project delivery processes.
- Mentor junior engineers, designers, and technicians.
- Support workforce planning and development of future engineering roles.
- Promote collaboration and continuous improvement across operations, manufacturing, and maintenance teams.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Process Engineering (P.Eng. or eligibility preferred).
- 7 years of progressive engineering experience, including 3 years managing capital projects.
- Strong technical understanding of industrial process systems, utilities, mechanical equipment, and equipment integration.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary teams or external engineering firms.
- Proficiency with project management tools (MS Project, Primavera) and CAD tools (AutoCAD, SolidWorks).
- Strong communication skills and ability to convey technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.
Preferred Attributes
- PMP certification or equivalent training.
- Experience with process equipment, facility expansions, or industrial installation projects.
- Troubleshooting experience across mechanical, process, or utilities systems.
- Familiarity with ISO 9001, safety systems, and commissioning protocols.
